Easily one of the best English novels ever written, and one of my lifetime favorites. My first time through (9th grade) I missed a lot, but I’ve picked up a little more each time I’ve read it, and I’ve enjoyed it more every time. Thackeray billed this as “a novel without a hero,” but he was only trying to be cynical, and he couldn’t pull it off. There are plenty of heros. And plenty of villains. The plot follows two young ladies making their way through English society, one of them a Scarlett O’Hara, but sooo much worse, and one of them a Melanie, but sooo much sweeter. There are men aplenty, some of them heroes, and some not. Who comes out on top? No guessing–you have to read this lively book. At 700 pages, it skips right along, except for a few slow chapters in the middle. No matter--they can be skimmed through--and it all wraps up with a most delightful and satisfying ending.

This is a title that would never catch my attention, (except for the bad grammar) but your reviews always make me want to try the book. I'll give this one a go. "Calm," "happy," and "simple" sound good to me right now.

Michelle’s review of “Ballet Shoes” reminded me of this series. I first read “Skating Shoes” when I was about ten, and was thoroughly enchanted. Thin little “ginger-haired” Harriet is made to take up ice skating to strengthen her legs, after a long illness has left them spindly. She becomes a companion to rich little pampered little Lalla, who has been skating since she was three. Lalla’s ambitious aunt is pushing her up through the ranks to make her a gold-level skater at the earliest possible age, so she can go on to become the world champion. And Harriet is expected to stay in Lalla’s shadow and never progress beyond the preliminary rank. You can see where this is leading, and it’s lots of fun. There are wonderful insights into British culture of the early 50's, which were way over my head the first time around.

My copy of this classic work isn't the Legacy Reprint Series edition shown in the picture, but a nice old leather volume printed in 1945 with "Property of Ashael and Ida Allen" stamped in the front. I'm looking forward to a great read.

Sherlock Holmes, duped by his friends, travels to Vienna and meets Sigmund Freud, who cures Holmes of his cocaine addiction. And that’s only half of the story! There’s intrigue, murder, deception, and a great train chase, while the unflappable Holmes smokes his pipe and makes brilliant deductions. The novel has all the feel and flavor of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but was written in 1974 by Nicholas Meyer, who nails the characters and style of Conan Doyle so perfectly, you could swear it was written by the great master himself. If anything, it’s better, because the characters are more vivid and the pace is faster. A great way to get hooked into the adventures of Holmes and his sidekick, the “elementary-my-dear” Watson.
