One thing I enjoy about Southern fiction is the ability of Southeners to laugh at themselves. Living in California has made me awaare of how different people's behavior can be based on where they live. I'm a nurse and do inpatient care. I find a tremedous lack of a sense of humor. People don't really talk to each other and can work together for long periods of time and not know each other. In just a few pages of many southern books I feel like I have new friends that I could tell about my life and we could laugh together.

It doesnt get any better than this. When I was little my Mom would let us stay up late to watch the movie. I never read it until I was 46 years old. The lessons concerning human rights and the violation of them, kindness in the face of predjudice, the courage to stand up for what we belive in, and most of the magical thinking of innocence. All spoken in a sweet southern drawl.EW

I'm a Southerner living in California. When I get homesick (which is almost daily) I read Southern literature. Pata Conroy's descriptions of the marsh leave me feeling as if I can smell the salt air, feel the sticky breeze on my face, and hear the southern accents. Oh to be in South Carolina,

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It dealt with a part of society I'd given very little thought to. I hope that in the real world people that are so different can find similarities and learn to care and look out for each other.
