I like this perspective on the steps. I wish, however, that there were some questions to answer. I always enjoy a good workbook for the steps. So, Kevin Griffin, I'm putting you on notice...how 'bout a workbook to accompany this book? If you need a writer who's familiar with Buddhism and the steps, I might know someone with very reasonable rates who'd be willing to help you out...(less)

I have been enjoying this book, but something seems a little drabby about it. It's kind of a bildingsroman deal, with the woman gradually awakening and recovering herself from a childhood and early girlhood plagued by addiction, domestic violence, and sexual abuse. I know the combination of these three elements seem like they'd be really appealing to me, but the speaker feels a little juvenile. I did like the scene where she got her tattoo and was cured of all her life's problems...
She does the thing where she floats along from man to man to man, looking for the one who will be right and who will "fix" her. It's frustrating to watch her growing and recovering, but to see that she never truly stands alone. Maybe it's only kind of bad because it's translated, though...learning about the Yakuza culture is kind of cool...(less)

This is one of the best books I've ever read. Really. It changed the way that I think about books and how they can be written. It affected the way I wrote my own manuscript when I was in graduate school. The structure of the book is amazing...there are so many layers and so much to consider in the way the book is put together...and then, there is some of Atwood's best writing about love. Some of the language is pure poetry...my favorite part includes the "falling out of an airplane by mistake" bit. Aaahhh!(less)
