This book has an interesting, well-written story that tracks character development and creates a connection with the reader - in the first half, and then it unravels. The first half of the book is about Khadra, a Syrian-born American girl, growing up in Indiana and the issues she faces and is surrounded by in her Musliam Da'wah community.

In the second half of the book, the connection was lost. It became about Khadra's struggle with being a Muslim woman (in a fairly extreme way at one point), which is a bit too stereotypical for me. But it felt less about Khadra's cevelopment as a character and mroe about the author using Khadra as a mouthpiece.

Because I find it physically uncomfortable to watch interviews (the questions make me cringe, the answers are vague or uninteresting or evasive - in general), the only things I knew about Barbara Walters before reading this book were: what she looked like, "Baba Wawa", that she was on 20/20 and is now on The View, a show I have never watched. But, the book was on sale on my Kindle, so I bought it.

And it was very interesting! Walters has had an amazing life. She has an entertaining, if sometimes heavy-handed, style, and she can laugh at herself. A book for book lovers! Twelve-year-old David, growing up in WWII London and the surrounding countryside, loses his mother, and inherits a step-mother and new baby brother. He is lost in books and falls into an imaginary world of myth and fairytales, just a bit different from those in our own world. He has a journey requiring courage and bravery to return to his own world, which, of course, he ultimately does and goes on to grow from adolescence into adulthood. My neighbor and fellow book club member recommended this to me as a powerful read. It was interesting, but not fascinating. It is always nice to read stories of people of different socio-economc statuses finding common ground and reminding us what it is to be human, though.
