Just re-read this for the third time. Truly a classic, and rollickingly fummy. The reasoning and emotions are just as relevant today. Love how it captures a period in the evolution of eco-warriors, the inconsistency of the human beings who do the acts, and the "types" involved.

Abbey clearly loved machinery, the idea of destroying it when necessary and the desert landscape. If you have ever been to southern Utah, Colorado, on the western rivers and in the canyons, he really brings it all back in his descriptions.

Story of a middle aged woman artist and her growing up in Canada. Painstakingly accurate description of the cruelty of children towards each other and the unbridgeable gap between the adult and child world. Also a poignant recognition of how people can change in middle age from our childhood perceptions of them.

For me, this book emphasizes why women's lib is so important. I first read this in French in high school. I really enjoyed the descriptiveness even though Flaubert was supposed to have overdone that on purpose to make fun of the bourgeoisie. The true value of this book is what I have learned about life now that I am 51, versus what I knew when I was 17. Society and culture have changed so much in France, and here. We can only hope that women continue to be educated and to have a role in the larger world.

I accidentally picked up this serial murder book (yup, I just adore them, yuk!) and really enjoyed George's writing. She gets heavily into the character's personalities and motivations. I loved that it was set in London because I had been in many of the places she mentioned.

He is a decent writer but I got irritated at several literary techniques that he overused: foreshadowing and italicized thoughts of the characters. (italics)No, he had only meant to wound, not kill. She was someone he could have gotten close, not like Karine, more gentle, more forgiving, but now dead on the floor. (close italics)

This is a novel and I guess I was wishing for well-written nonfiction, instead. I got frustrated not really knowing what was true and what was extrapolated. It was certainly interesting but I ended up only skimming the last hundred pages.
