Richard Russo, author of Empire Falls for which he won the Pulizer prize), gets another one just right. He has created a whole world in Thomaston, NY and a cast of characters we come to know well. The corner store become a place where we might want to hang out. It is the story of Louis C Lynch (Lucy) and his wife Sarah and their old friend Bobby, who lives in Italy. It is a story about coming to terms with our lives and the people around us. It is about living in a small town, yet living a full life. Russo is wonderful writer who will take you on a grand journey through his character's lives. ]]>
Many sides of the health care debate are depicted in this novel, making this a timely book. The author is knowledgeable about biotech research and her account of drug research is interesting. The story involves children with a brain disease that causes strokes and are awaiting a treatment, a scientist working on a new drug to treat such diseases and a doctor at the FDA in charge of approving such drugs. The stories are woven together and intersect at the conclusion. Although at times, I wished for more vividly drawn characters and more detail, for the most part these people's lives became real for me and their predicaments heartbreaking. ]]>
