I am "excessively diverted" by short people. I especially like kids, but I think it's mostly because they're short and haven't gotten all serious about it. The absurdity of the existence of short people makes me laugh, kind of the same way that I look in the mirror, laugh and think, "Is that me? That's odd: I don't feel like I look like that."

I miss Humboldt County: the ocean and the redwoods, the waist-high fog and the green grass that is excessively lush until you're a mile out in your bare feet and realize that these idyllic walks do look better in the movies, and how about watching one now? Darcy's lawn at Pemberly? He has ground's keepers to remove the thistles that you're plucking from your toe. But, I miss that too.

Most of all, I miss her. She awoke in me the love (frail as it is) that I have for God, and my delight in short, absurd things. She is why I'll stare a moment too long if you have flame-tinged hair, green eyes and freckles, or an over-the-shoulder impish grin; she is why I endure the pharasaical hypocrisy of cats and why I love all growing things. She was tumultuous as a kitten and as gloriously absurd, delighting in life as a child on Christmas, every rainstorm a present, every sunset a gift: bush bunnies on flip-flops, nieces on knees, feral kittens and scarred hands, roosters out our window at midnight, dogs chasing otters, ducks chasing dogs, roosters in the Mexican's stew in the evening: these she loved. Wild rose on a sliding cliff, she lived and died to the Glory of God. She was Holly Beth, born on her mother's bed, married in her father's yard, died on her family's couch.
