This was a surprisingly good book - well fleshed out characters, nice plot, insightful themes. This is a great summer read, and won't leave you hanging and feeling like you've wasted hours of your life. Instead it will make you slightly more reflective about how we spend our life and how we embrace the choices in our life....less

I absolutely love David Sedaris and thought that this book would be along the same vein. While Agustun has a great style and is very humerous, the story of his childhood is so crazy and awful that at some point it stops being funny and starts becoming tragic. I think that it's a worthy read if you can steel yourself against what happened to him- he has a wonderful way with words, but just don't expect this to be a light and sunny lark....less

"This was really a fascinating book with a unique storyline. I'm not sure what to say about it except that it was a really exciting interesting book to read and I would definitely recommend it as a "vacation" book.

I actually couldn't finish this book, as it was too annoying and dull. Lyle and I listened to it as a book on tape while driving cross-country (so in general should be willing to listen to almost anything), however his dull monotonous stories about wandering around England in the rain and going into bars and meeting miserable annoying people was just too much. We got through about 1/2 of the book and finally said to each other "I would rather listen to nothing than continue with this book." It's funny because I LOVED his book "A Walk in the Woods" so was sure that this would also be spectacular. What a letdown....less

While it may seem like it would be a relatively boring and dry history book, this book kept my attention and really educated me about the start of the revolutionary war. Although the war lasted many more years, this book focuses on the starting actions of the Revolutionary War- essentially what happened in 1776. It goes into a great amount of detail on what happened, but it really is fascinating because the characters are people you know (e.g. Washington) and the detail makes you feel much more "in the know" about who they were as people vs just the distant legends you've heard of. If you are at all interested in the Revolutionary War, this is a great book.

Bill Bryson has a very interesting book about his forays into the culinary world of chefs and line cooks, introduced through a friendship with Mario Batali and spurred by his personal culinary interest. His stories about being a line cook are really fun and interesting, however he sometimes gets too marred in the culinary details about how foods were originated, etc. If he'd stuck to soley writing about his personal experiences, I would have absolutely loved this book- but nonetheless it's a really fun read....less
