Profound overview, if that isn't an oxymoron, of the development of ideas within the context of Occidental history by a Jungian scholar. Highly recommended.

An interesting and frustrating book. I listened to the CD version and felt like it was hours of infomercial for the right brain. Maybe the book would have gone down easier. His point that our culture is moving from the Information Age into a Conceptual Age makes sense, at least for parts of our culture, but his conclusion that the way to succeed in the Conceptual Age is to do work at the highest levels of creativity will undoubtedly be useless to most of us. Our brains simply do not work that way, and they won't work that way, regardless of how many classes we take to develop the right halves. Further, his assumption that India and other outsourcing provider countries will content themselves with absorbing off-shored left brain Information Age jobs as America, Japan and Western Europe rocket into the Conceptual Age probably won't play out. India is already producing some highly creative IT work and will no doubt continue to develop more creative workers, since that is the direction the global economy is driving all of us. Likewise for China. I think it more likely that, as with the divergence of Information Age from Industrial Age work paths, the Conceptual Age work will be done in countries all around the world, and even in the US we will have a large number of unemployed and underemployed Information Age workers subsisting on low wages as they compete with their Indian peers.

So, I would say that he raises some good points but that his conclusions do not follow from his evidence.

Insightful, historically-based view of the advantages of having a mind that won't stay still but rather moves rapidly, and powerfully, from task to task. I love the way Thom Hartmann can see the positive side, the opportunity, hidden in a way of being that is anathema to educators.
