Jake Garrison is in his mid 30's, tall, beefy, muscular and not bad looking. He's more than quite smart and straightening out businesses seems to be his forte. Jake and his wife Diana have been trying for years to conceive a child but to no avail. Now using the rhythm method it seems to be more of a chore than anything.

The story is more about Jake than anything and it starts out with him writing a novel about his father and grandfather, their triumphs, wars they served in and survived through and their many other accomplishments. Unfortunately for Jake, his publisher doesn't like what he's written.

Jake's father, who was a physician, is close to death and over the period of weeks declines dramatically. The father wants Jake to go to his desk at his office and get a bottle that contains who knows what and put 4 drops of this in the I.V. so that he can pass away now with dignity. This becomes a bit of a moral dilemma for Jake as the idea of possibly being found out by the medical team and his wife make him think on it a bit.

It's not until over half way through the book that the father does expire and Jake and Diana take over the father's apartment. On their moving day is when Diana surprises Jake with the fact that she thinks she is pregnant. Unfortunately Jake has his doubts as to being the father even though there is no proof of adultery by Diana.

I think that most of the first half of the story was about Jake infiltrating a typewriter company and reporting back to a "Hood" so to speak. It seems like it is a gang type take over that is about to take place and possibly a hostile one at that. I expected the story to have more about his father and his wife in it than there was especially since that is what the cover story portrayed.
I would have to say, "Yes, I was a bit disappointed and let down".

I feel the author could have spent more time giving Jake a personality but instead the character comes across stiff, uncaring and completely distrustful of everyone including his father and wife. With a bit more work I think this could have been a much better story....less "
