The book is soooo much better than the movie. In fact, I really didn't care for the movie. I watched the movie prior to reading the book and wasn't too impressed. However, a friend recommended the book and I really liked it. A lot was changed in the movie. The story takes place in Ireland where a young girl is having to deal with the loss of her husband. She has great support from her family and friends. She's helped to move on by 10 letters, she's to open monthly, her husband wrote before he died. A very sweet, touching story. Just to forwarn, there is some language that some may find offensive. ...less

I really enjoyed reading this book. In this autobiography, C.S. Lewis writes about events in his life that led to him becoming an atheist, to later finding God (or rather just no longer being able to deny that God does exist) and subsequently becoming a Christian. Very real, honest writing of one's life. Really liked it....less

This was a bit of a disturbing read. The author has worked extensively with troubled children. This is one of her stories of how she helped a girl who was being abused sexually. There was also suspicions that satanistic rituals were going on. It was difficult to read the girls account of what had happened her. I stuck with the book wanting to know how it was going to pan out, but was disappointed in the end that things were left unanswered. However, it was amazing how a teacher got involved to help this clearly disturbed girl. Just to warn there is some language and abuse issues that some may find difficult to read. I did. ...less

This book has been compared to Dan Brown's DaVinci Code. It was published shortly after Brown's. Both pertain to the Holy Grail, but I found them to be very different novels. Liked both. This one has 2 stories going. Present day and 13th century medieval Southern France. It was beautifully written describing the setting. We actually stayed in the Pyrenees mountains last year and could envision where the story was taking place while reading. However, we ran out of time to go to Carcassonne where much of the story takes place and I so wish we had gone. I did enjoy the book, especially the medieval historical parts of it. There are a couple intimate scenes (some may find inappropriate) and a brutal scene where men, women, and children are slaughtered. A little too descriptive there for me. ...less

I really enjoyed this book. Very fun read. It's just about the goings on of the people who live in the different apartments at 44 Scotland Street. There's different personalities that we've all come across and can relate to. Even though it takes place in Edinburgh, these same types are everywhere. If you've read the No.1 Ladies Dectective Agency Series, you'll like this. I've only read a couple of those, but liked this better. I was a little disappointed that he left me wondering what happened to a couple of the characters, but I've just learned that he's written a couple sequels (Expresso Tales and Love Over Scotland). I'm looking forward to reading both of them. ...less
