I've read this book out of order, having found it for 50 cents at a thrift store recently; I read the first of the series years ago and loved it, and intended to read them all then--but as they say, the road to hell is paved with those good intentions. I couldn't resist the price for this one, and of course once it was in hand, I couldn't resist reading it. As always, I am enchanted by Card's brilliant ability to create believable new worlds--in this case, OUR world, but perhaps as imagined by Picasso. Though Card sort of "wrote himself out" for me in the Ender series (all of which I read, despite the fact that some of what he wrote clunked with me), I continue to admire him overall, and this series really appeals to me. I have ordered the rest of the books from Amazon and will be immersing myself in this Card-world as soon as they arrive. Obviously, I really, really liked this book!...less

Not my favorite of Quindlen's books (that would have to be <u>One True Thing<u/>), but very quick and smooth, like all her books. I do believe I must have read this years ago, because there were so many "echoes" as I read. Thus, the fact that I sort of thought it predictable may be put down to the vague memory of having read it before. Still, a good book with good writing and worth the read....less

Bailey White has always been one of my favorite listening pleasures from NPR/GPB, but I don't think I had ever read any of her work. I read this one all in one sitting, because I kept saying to myself, "I'll just read one more..." until there really was only one left in the book. I got caught up in her descriptions and homey metaphors, and eventually found myself laughing aloud in my room at 2 in the morning.
Funny, touching, SOUTHERN--worth every second you spend reading it....less

Perhaps this is really more like a 3.5.
This book is rather a puzzle to me; there is good writing here (as in, good ideas, good sentences, good paragraphs, good descriptions, nicely drawn scenes, etc.), but at the same time, I felt as if Allende's plotting was very scattered. There were so many characters introduced, so many ideas created that were not ultimately followed or resolved. In addition, there are grammatical quirks--probably due to Allende's not having been a native speaker of English--that are rather distracting.
Bottom line: it's almost as if there were several books here. Allende did some great research, and the historical references are very interesting and well written; I just thought she could have cleaned up the plot lines. I did, overall, enjoy reading the book, but I don't think it's a great piece of literature....less

This is one of those books one might want to give up on in its early stages, but it was my experience that staying with it was well worth it. This novel, based on meticulous research by Hickam of the destruction of US ships (military and civilian) off the East Coast, begins to really carry one along once Hickam establishes his foundations. (The book in fact precedes <u>The Ambassador's Son<u>, another of my favorite books by this author.) Some of the events, especially as the book rushes to its end, border on magical realism; one in particular had my mouth open with delighted surprise (and hope). Hickam is a remarkably good writer, in terms of both mechanics and plot/character development. I thoroughly enjoyed this book....less
