The Wittgensteinian attempt to clarify mental concepts in order to help out neuroscience comes off as, at best, misguided. Bennet and Hacker re-hash Wittgenstein's arguments to present a basic mereological point - that we can only meaningfully say of persons that they think, believe and so on, because it is human activity that gives the words 'think', 'believe' etc... their meaning. To say of a brain that it 'thinks' is therefore not even false - it is meaningless. It is nonesense. And so on.... The comebacks from Dennett and Searle are entertaining enough but the whole thing is somewhat pointless. The meanings of words are always extensible. They are not bounded by the behaviours that generated them, and the scientific attempt to extend meaning is not, in itself, dangerous or misguided.(less)

I had written a very extensive review of this book, and then I discovered a very cogent criticism of it, which essentially dismantles Behe's whole argument. Basically, the article proceeds by explaining that the hammartia of Behe's argument is a very complex biological phenomenon that, the biologist who wrote the article explains, is so difficult to truly comprehend that even some scientists might find it daunting, but even so, he proceeds. The crux of the issue is this: Behe apparently grossly misrepresents the mathematical, statistical, and biochemical element of random mutation.

Up until tonight, I was unaware of these criticisms. I had very much enjoyed this book, but now I'm deeply concerned that it is fallacious. It's hard to judge a he-said-she-said. The claims of the biologist in the review seem very cogent and reputable, but so did Behe's when I read them initially. So, I have cleared my ranking and deleted my original review.
