While hunting for structure in memoir, I spied on "The Rumpus" and found a reference to this book. It's framed within Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Black Veil" which is interesting, but I'm not convinced it works. It's literal thread is formal and lofty when it could be captivating and urgent. The digressions are pretty great at times-beautiful phrasing-but also self indulgent and tedious. What resonates the best are the relationships in the book, which are sick, like the author. Some sentences are absolutely stellar. But overall, I'm enjoying it. It's very dense so I wouldn't read this book when you're less than fresh.

I loved that book. It's a very ambitious novel and the pace is manic and great. A chick I assisted for a while adapted the screenplay to it.

Bruce Benderson is onto himself. That's what makes him smarter and more attractive as an author than many others. I picked this up after reading his non-fiction book "The Romanian" which I like better than this novel so far. His voice is aggressive and gooey, the stuff of gay sex clubs and hypodermic crime in the 90's in New York. In that way, his book is like a cozy dear friend from that era when needles and junk were served up with Nirvana and vintage lace slips. His novel reminds me of other well known confrontational queer male writers of the time, like David Wojnarowitz. Still, there are sentences that are sublime. That's probably why he's with Plume.

Someone I respect and adore sent me this book after her jaw hit the floor. "No," I admitted. " I haven't read 'Geek Love' yet." She ended the madness. I haven't read any fiction in a year so it was an oasis in a desert of narcissism and entitlement-the cancerous twins of non-fiction. I can't put it down and am sad when duty calls me away from it. The writing sings. The characters are rich, fleshy and desperate. The action is precise. The love between the family members is undeniable. I haven't felt this way since Kathy Acker.

Zac Sabbath is snarky and brilliant. He speaks of life in the double zeros like a modern day sensualist. I loved his brain, his characters and his insights. The only thing lacking for me was the storyline, which floated off into space- lost in tangent; very smart, snarky tangents, but a tangent nonetheless. What this book has in it's corner is it's uniqueness. Smith's drawings are incredible. I've had the pleasure of seeing them up close.

Benderson tangles Romanian History with his own as he develops a one-sided relationship with a Romanian hustler he picked up on the street. He has an unlikely affair with Romulus-a boy who is gay for pay. Benderson's descriptions of the setting of modern and archaic Bucharest in all of the wretched poverty and the pride and survival that is necessary to the proud gypsies is captivating. Benderson's phrasing is at times, stunning. He is also an admitted exploiter. I loved this book.
