Verse 25:

There was something formless and perfect before the universe was born. It is seren. Empty. Solitary. Unchanging. Infinite. Eternally present. It is the mother of the universe. For lack of a better name. I call it the Tao.

I call it great.
Great is boundless;
boundless is eternally flowing;
ever flowing, it is constantly returning.

Therefore, the Way is great,
heaven is great,
earth is great,
people and great.

Thus, tho know humanity,understand earth.
To know earth, understand heaven.
To know heaven, understand the Way.
To know the Way, understand the great within yourself.

    			  This series is starting to feel like an after school special. Just because the book's YA fiction, doesn't mean you have to shove the "moral of the story" down our throats. We're smart enough to draw our own conclusions about the character's actions. But then again, I'm not even sure whether this series is trying to market to teens anymore. Dialogue between the characters is sophmoric, like these conversations should be taking place on an elementary school playground and not during an end-of-the-world situation. Most of Zoey's circle of friends simply echo assurances babbled by the "smart one" in the group, or say "me too" just so we know they are still alive.

Despite the crappy dialogue, this book does further the story line between Zoey and Kalona. And in its after-school-speacial-way, shows that Zoey isn't willing to make the same mistake twice. Her attraction to Kalona, however, has her making that age old mistake of thinking you can change a person by helping them realize they have a choice. While choice is important, Zoey's learning that a tiger can't change it's stripes, and we get to enjoy it when the tiger bites her head off.

Verse 24:

If you stand on tiptoe, you cannot stand firmly.
If you take long steps, you cannot walk far.

Showing off does not reveal enlightenment.
Boasting will not produce accomplishment.
He who is self-righteous is not respected.
He who brags will not endure.

All these ways of acting are odious, distateful.
They are superfluous excesses.
They are like a pain in the stomach,
a tumor in the body.

When walking the path to Tao,
this is the very stuff that must be
uprooted, thrown out and left behind.

To talk a little is natural: Fierce winds do not blow all morning; a downpour of rain does not last the day. Who does this? Heavan and earth.

But these are exaggerated, forced effects, and that is why they cannot be sustained. If heavan and earth cannot sustain a forced action, how much less is man able to do?

Those who follow the Way become one with the Way. Those who follow goodness become one with goodness.
Those who stray from the Way and goodness become one with failure.

If you conform to the Way, its power flows through you. your actions become those of nature, your ways those of heavan.

Open yourself to the Tao and trust your natural responses...then everything will fall into place.
