I gave it 3 stars, too. I'd compare it to Nirvana's Nevermind: an above-average piece of art that gets a reputation for excellence because of its context. (Maybe that's OK---I'm not the most well-versed in aesthetic philosophy.) What I've read about pre-Watchmen comics suggests that Alan Moore's story really pushed the envelope and went a direction nobody had ever taken before. Some people say we have Alan Moore to thank for round superheroes. I don't know, but I do know that every comic boy shouts out his name when arguing about the literary merit of comics.
About those excerpts. The book was originally published in 12 monthly installments, with each chapter in the book corresponding to an issue in the miniseries. In that light, the excerpts served to say, "Hey, listen, don't put this comic down yet. Let your eyes move over what you're reading here, but really, think about what you just read. Don't put this comic down and move on with your life just yet." I still think it's awkward, but I think I see what he was trying to do. ]]>
