Barbara Hambly also wrote my favorite Star Trek novel, "Ishmael." This features characters from the crew of the original series AND characters from the cast of the contemporaneous TV series "Here Come the Brides", to create an alternate history story (sort-of) for the Star trek universe.

Spock investigates a Klingon plot to disrupt the time-stream, and is transported back to the year AD 1867 near the town of Seattle, Washington. There he becomes a temporary member of the community and only remembers fitful and disturbing snatches of the future, having lost his memory as a consequence of Klingon interrogation methods. By the end of the story Spock's/Ishmael's presence has affected nearly the entire community of frontier Seattle, as well as the entire future of the Federation.

Spoiler Alert!

Kirk discovers on the last page, by way of exercising one of his command prerogatives, Spock had also affected his own ancestry.

John McWhorter's books on language ("Language Interrupted", etc...) were recommended to me by someone who saw me engrossed in Steven Pinker's "The Language Instinct"; and this was the only McWhorter book waiting to-be-read on my bookshelf. So far it's a devastating indictment of the widespread adoption of the Cult of Victimology by the black community in America, and the way victimology holds blacks back from achieving their full potential; even more than the remnants of latent (or blatent) racism in post-Civil Rights Era America.
