No long review here. Buy this book. And if you are in a hurry read all except the last three chapetrs. But buy and read.

I want to recommend. One of the upsides of traveling by trains is that I get time to read books. One that was advised – and I’m glad it was – is a book by Tom Hayes called Jump Point: How Network Culture is Revolutionizing Business.

Hayes writes about how we are getting ready to experience a cultural change every bit as profound as the Industrial Revolution. He argues that as the 3 billionth person gets online sometime in 2011, it will shift the dynamic of how we interact as businesses and consumers (i'm not sure about that but that is a minor personal detail. We get to 5 billion by 2015. The mind boggles as he starts outlining the interactions and consequences. But he also states that the transitions encountered by our grandparents were of even a bigger size.

I found something on almost every page that I reflected upon.

I prefer authors who have done a lot of thinking about their subjects, and who can write easily and fluidly and communicate their thoughts without weighing me down with unnecessary verbiage. Hayes has done that. Moreover, having a little expertise of my own, i loved this references and new insights (and also the confirmation of my own insighs).

Also inspired by Barry Ritholz review of Tom's book
Rules to Break & Laws to Follow

by Don Peppers & Martha Rogers
[Rules to Break and Laws to Follow:]

Reading a book 2 years after its release is sometimes challenging. In this case I only can say that Peppers and Rogers do it again. Their insights probably written down somewhere in 2007 reflects the current world perfectly

Against conventional business wisdom, Peppers and Rogers claim that current sales and profits aren’t the best measure of any success. Their proposed model acknowledgdes:

1. Customers will do business with companies they trust.
2. Employees will earn customer trust only after they trust their employer.

So, success is about trust. And that moves businesses from a short-term focus on how much money they are making to how much value they are creating by building trusting relationships or encounters with their customers.

They point out that customers are in short supply, so most of what passes for customer acquisition is just competitors trading customers with each other. That means you have to manage the customer’s experience with your company by making sure you understand the customer’s perspective and treat them right. Customers who trust you are loyal and come back to do business with you – again and again.

The authors caution against staying in the crisis of short-termism. They suggest 12 laws to follow. My favorites:

1. Culture will drive value or culture will drag value
2. Dissent and diversity drive creativity and innovation
3. Customers are a scarce resource
4. Innovate or die

My favorite quote:
Remember that as far as your customers are concerned, the ordinary, low-level customer-contact employee they meet at the store, talk to on the phone, or interact with during a service transaction of any kind - that employee is your company!

Bottom line: our world is changing and one has to connect and react..
