I picked up this paperback in Dubai and had it finished on my layover in Cologne (three days later). It was a fantastic book. A real page turner! I needed a break from non fiction. A lighter read. It was the second Follett book I've read, the first being "Pillars of the Earth."

This is a cloak and dagger novel. Set in 1944 England during the allied buildup prior to the Normandy invasion. A German spy, "Die Nadel" or, "Eye of the Needle," discovers an amazing secret vital to Nazi Germany's success on the Western Front. With the MI5 and the rest of Britain's secret service hot on his tail he must inform Hitler of this vital knowledge.

Ken Follett follows his style of interweaving several different characters and several different stories which add depth to this book. Off course, all of these side stories and characters are interconnected with the overall plot and come crashing together at the end.

I couldn't put this book down! It hit on all my interest (WW2, History, Action, Mystery). I would highly recommend this book.

Stunning and Amazing. In some light it gives hope for our clandestine services. In another light it sends shivers down your spine as an American being targeted. The lesson learned from the 9/11 commission are quoted but not used to write this book. The author Steve Coll takes us from the Soviet and Mujahideen battle during the 1980's to the days prior to 9/11.

Missteps and inaction are the two words which come to mind as our State Department and CIA wrangle over how to deal with the growing Taliban/Al Qaeda/Osama threat while not stepping on the toes of our international "partners" Saudi Arabia, U.A.E., and most vividly Pakistan.

I certainly hope our current leaders have read this book.

Churchill is someone I always heard about of course, but my knowledge extended to pictures of him sitting next to Roosevelt and Stalin during WW2 and of course the occasional witty line or two in print.

I received this entire set as a gift and I have been waiting for the right time to dive in. I finally started volume one (this book) and was pleasantly surprised. The format starts off really dry, but once you get used to his writing style and start reliving his thoughts and all the stupid decisions that led up to Germany's rearmament and the start of Hitlers expansion in to neighboring countries it started to read more like other history books I've read.

Parts of this book are dry talking of different bits and pieces of a complicated English government, but overall an interesting read full of rarely mentioned events and reasons why WW2 started and caught everyone off guard. Of course Churchill would say, "I told you so!"

Amazing and tragic. Listen up American media. Everyone should read this powerful true story of an amazing and tragic mission deep in the Hindu Kush of Afghanistan. This book reads very fast and tells the story of American Special Forces doing what they are called upon and paying the ultimate sacrifice for an increasingly unknowing and unappreciative nation. Very, very good book.
