jo, this isn't a review, it's a journal article! Bravo! I think that you have hit the nail on the head about why some people love this book and others are disturbed by it. I loved it, but I think that one of the most interesting things that good SF can do is to explore gender and sexuality in challenging ways (eg. The Left Hand of Darkness, one of my favorites).
