What an unlikable pair, Belano and Lima make. Seems only fitting (and fair to the reader) to keep them at a removed narrative distance.

The length of the middle section gives gravity to Garcia Madero's final month of diary entries. As we circle endlessly around Belano and Lima's comings and goings, their expanding and diminishing wake, Bolano increases the tension, while straying far from the first section's cliffhanger. What happened out there in the desert? I wouldn't have cared nearly as much without the intervening 20 years of testimony.
