This book was really disappointing. As a sequel to Good in Bed, I expected it to be similarly uplifting and body-positive, but it wasn't. It was filled with self-loathing, not just self-deprecation, which can be done in good spirits, but genuine body hate. I have been a fan of you and your books for a long time, I first read Good in Bed when I was pregnant with my now-4.5 year old daughter, and ended up naming her based on a section of your book (her name is Abigail).. In any case, I have been a fan both of your writing and humor, and because of the messages of positive self-identity you give all of us fat girls out there. I recommended your books far and wide (especially on the Fatshionista livejournal community) because I really believed that your books were an excellent source of fat-positivity. However, as soon as I opened Certain Girls , I was inundated with line after line of Cannie's negative self-talk about her body. There seems to be a definite change in the way you portrayed her in this book than in the previous one, and it has really made it a slow read for me. In fact, I haven't gotten more than 1/3 through the book, which is very sad to me because I was really looking forward to reading it. I guess my question is, was it intentional? Did you mean to turn Cannie from mildly self-deprecating into blatant self-hating? I will keep reading, because I hope that somewhere along the line I will stop coming across the words "dimply thighs" and the stereotypical fat-girl-eating-a-tub-of-ice-cream-to-make-herself-feel-better references, and get back to the sarcastic, but confident Jennifer Weiner characters I have come to love.
