As of this novel, I'm not really sure the title of the series works anymore. Will is officially a Ranger now, no longer an apprentice. He's got his first official assignment and everything. I was really surprised by the author's choice to skip about 4 years of time between the previous novel and this one. It doesn't cause any problems, it's just surprising, considering the fact that it is a YA series, and Will is not quite so young anymore. The novels continue to have a YA appeal, though, so we can easily ignore my pointing out of the semantics of the series title.
This novel involves some intrigue. I unfortunately saw a lot of the twists before they were revealed, but I doubt many truly young readers would. There were, however, some interesting twists that I did not foresee tied to the things I did. Altogether an enjoyable read, even if I had to suppress some vaguely violent tendencies as I finished the cliff-hanger ending. *grumble* ]]>
