I think Dan Brown would get a lot more slack from his critics if he wouldn't simultaneously claim to be a voracious researcher of facts and then claim "nope, fiction!" when someone tries to refute his historical innacuracies. If he wanted to come out and say "Here's all the things I made up that make the Catholic Church look bad. Here's how I juxtaposed events of different centuries because WOW! what a great story this is with all this fiction," I'd be a bigger fan. As it was, I even enjoyed the movie more than many of my ilk.
But he (and Howard, and Hanks)like to present the fictional material of the story as if it's fact. I can't blame Dan Brown for the fact that people who don't know their history believe what he writes, but his "this may not be true, but it ought to be because the Church is so evil" mindset wears thin.
