I really like Martin Millar. I read The Good Fairies of New York last December, and his dry delivery of lines and description holds in this book as well. If anything, Lonely Werewolf Girl is better. A bit less madcap, over the top humor, but with more intrigue and plot. I hear there will be a sequel as well, so I'll look forward to that.(less)

Like pretty much everyone else I know, I thought this book was excellent. I'm not sure why it took me so long to get around to reading it. It sure will make you feel paranoid, though.
The version I read was from the Goodreads free library of public domain ebooks, and each chapter was dedicated by Doctorow to a different bookstore, everything from Amazon to specialty independents around the world. A nice touch.(less)

I found this book in a roundabout way through a blog linking to the author's website, and I enjoyed it a lot. It's the story of witches living in the colonies at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. This one combines my enjoyment of historical fiction with my enjoyment of fantasy in a very smooth way. It doesn't even really have to edge very far into alternative history, since Finlay works his witches into the fabric of our own history very subtly. Also nice, the other two books in what looks to be a trilogy will be released in May and then June, so we won't have to wait a year to find out what happens next.(less)

The theme for May's sci-fi selection on the Goodreads book club is spoof. Someone mistakenly suggested Robert Asprin's Myth series, which is fantasy, so I countered with the first volume of this series, Phule's Company, since it's actually legitimately sci-fi. (This is an annoyingly common occurence in the book club suggestion threads.) While in the bookstore, I saw that there were two new ones that I hadn't read yet, so I got them in anticipation. Of course, my suggestion didn't win, but I read them anyway. I don't think these later books are quite as good as the first ones, but they're still fun.(less)
