Reading this in follow-up to "Terms of Endearment" and in an effort to read McMurtry's entire Houston series. In "Terms" I was curious about the character of Danny Deck, and what to know more about him.
By far one of the best books I've read in a long time. The title says it all. Danny Deck is coming of age and trying to figure out where he fits in his own world, and sometimes that means making hard choices. Wickedly funny but also keenly emotional. In this book McMurtry has a way of writing so honestly about emotion it's almost as though you know Danny in real life.(less)

The movie version of this book seems to cheapen the subtleties and sadness of a story in which the good that people can do to one another and the harm that they can do so often overlap. The pure melancholy that exudes from the two main characters had a lump in my throat throughout my brief reading of this novella. Martin has done one of my favorite things a male writer can do — write deftly and sensitively from the perspective of a female. I really adore this book.(less)

I was never interested in the movie until it was featured on the Movie Of The Week Blog. From there I learned that it had been a memoir before it was a film, about a girl institutionalized in the 1960s.
This book seems to fall into the grand tradition of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "The Bell Jar." It is simply and lucidly written, and I was able to finish it in one afternoon. Unlike "The Bel Jar," where Plath's madness came on confusedly quick and seemingly out of nowhere, Kaysen's own illness is easy to relate to, for example, when she is sedated at the dentist and upon waking is anxious and confused about how much time has passed. It's easy to see here how the lines between sanity and insanity can be blurred, and how close we all are to the latter. (less)

I bought this book to read on my upcoming trip to Prague. What a walking cliche I am. But I also bought "The Road" so they balance each other out right?
Okay, I'm going to go ahead and review this even though I'm not finished, because I already know that my opinion of this book will not change.
Let me first start by telling you that Elizabeth Gilbert is the woman who brought into the world "Coyote Ugly." Had I know this before-hand I would have never bought this book.
And while I applaud Gilbert for trying to escape the mistake of her marriage by stuffing her face full of food, I just can't abide by the gushy-ness and rambling nature of everything she writes. I have ended up zoning out through about half of the book in the way you do when having a conversation (more like a monologue) with someone way too pleased with themselves.
I saw a video of her speaking at TED and thought she was funny and perky and kind of right on, and she sold me onto this book, but I should have known better when my bikini waxist saw it in my purse and told me she'd read it twice.
In summation: uhg.(less)

Okay, so I read this book in a single setting while on the plane to Prague. And then I made Christopher read it too. It made both of us cry. I have never been so persistent with a book before. I can't wait to see the movie, to see how they portray the setting, the relationship and the "Bad Guys."(less)
