Erin, I'm sure you get asked this all the time and are tired of it, but I'd like to know if you become interested in writing this circus related story because of "Water for Elephants" or if you have always had this idea in your head.

Your story was very magical, I might add. My favorite tent was the one with the bottles that contained the various places, scents, etc. :)

It was wonderful to read a story that was driven by the setting, rather than by the characters. Was this your original intention or did it just organically develop as the story grew?

I think that she just used magic to let herself be able to do that because not even regular people when they were young would be able to do that. I think that she used magic to make herself more limber, but I think that you are right when you say that she has a lot longer lifespan then others which seems to be the case for every single one in the story.

I used to think that the book was a horror story (forgive me I didn't read the blurb at that time :P), because of the mystery and spookiness of the circus. I think the cover is amazing, and the ideas are over the top. I loved the characters, and you described them really well too. The circus itself was very creative and out-of-the-box. I loved how you wrote it in different perspectives and time. The book is breathtaking and just purely fascinating. I love it so much. (:

I have a few questions, I hope you don't mind! (:

Writing Advice:
- I'm working on another novel at the moment, however, I'm having difficulties finding how I want to begin it. Any advice? Should I skip over the beginning and come back to it or...?
- Do you ever mentor teenagers who want to be an author?
- I don't know if you had this feeling, but when you are writing, do you worry that it's not good enough even though other people say otherwise? Because I totally do. I second guess all of my writing.

About the Night Circus:
- Is a movie or a tv show going to made for the Night Circus?
- How would you feel if they made an amusement park out of the Le Cirque De Reves? (My friends and I were talking about how cool this would be recently!)
- How did you come up with such a unique and brilliant story idea?
- Are you planning on writing any other books? (A sequel, a prequel, or a just a whole new book/series?)

Thanks Ms Morgenstern! Just as a side note, I just want to say how much I love your book and how inspiring I think you are. When I first tried NaNoWriMo a few years ago, I'll admit, I kind of scoffed at the idea of how a full length novel could spawn from it, but you prooved me wrong. Thank-you for showing me it is possible! (:

Dearest Erin... I hate to behave like a gushing fan but for you I must make an exception. For many years my list of favourite books has not changed...and then you came along and The Night Circus shoved its way into the #1 spot. WOW! I know it sounds so ridiculous to say thank you - but THANK YOU. In today's literary world I find there is so little that my heart gravitates towards. Something has changed and books that gratify the soul are so few and far between. Thank you for reminding me that there are books out there that still do exactly what they are supposed to. Thank you for being a breath of fresh air. You have all my love and heartfelt respect and appreciation.

How did you have the ideas of deciding to write about a magical circus? When I read your books from the start till end, I loved it! It made me think about how you could create things like the tents, the bottles and characters that seem so beautiful and dangerous at the same time. It was a beautiful story and eventhough it ended I wish you wrote a prequel on what happened to the two lovers. I hope you do, because sometimes I really wonder what happened to them and the rest of the circus with the new boy making the circus live on! But seriously Erin, the book talked to me. Strange but it just shows how good your amazing book was. The NIGHT CIRCUS was just simply enchanting and entertaining with a swish of magic and love in the air, I loved it to pieces..

Jul 25, 2012 03:58AM
Hi, Erin! I've been going through the earlier questions being asked, and will therefore (hopefully) get some of my burning questions answered. But I wonder - will you leave the circus and write about a totally different story for your next novel (which I'm looking forward to so much)? And, when you wrote this magical piece - did you already have a draft of what would happen or did you freestyle and write whatever felt most right after your gut as the story went further? And my third question - part one of the story began with two quotes, one by Thiessen and the other by Wilde, and I'm curious as to how and why and when you chose the latter one. Did you find Oscar Wilde's quote just out of the blue, or did you always have it in your mind, or was it an inspirational quote that made you think more about this plot? My fourth question: Did you think a lot about where the circus specifically would travel - as to where on the world map - since many places were located in Europe? Also, I would like to say that The Night Circus was an absolute delight to read, and it went on to my favorite's immediately, altough I must reread it in English. So, thank you!

First of all, it's been a few months since I finished your novel and I'm still mulling over all the wonderfully subtle intricacies of it. I loved that I became attached to nearly each and every character as well. I just have a couple questions regarding structure; q when you were writing the story, did you outline it in detail? If so, do you have any particular tips about outlining for a novel without killing your inspiration to write? Sometimes I find when I try to outline a story in full, I don't have as much of an urge to write as when I just freewrite.

I read The Night Circle not long after seeing a production of "Sleep No More" here in NYC. I then noticed you credited Punchdrunk in your acknowledgements, so I'd be interested to learn how much Punchdrunk directly inspired your portrayal of the circus. Would you like to see them (or another immersive production company) bring the Night Circus to life? Reading about the circus was so physical - you could see and smell and hear everything - so it seems like it would be an incredible way to expand on the story without going down the more traditional movie route (although I'd see that, too!).

Q. I find that the only people who complained about your book complained about the confusing timeline and didn't make it to the end. Those who did make it to the end, know that this confusion has a purpose. Was this your plan all along? To reward those who made it to the end in a sense?

Erin Morgenstern,

I just finished your book, The Night Circus yesterday and fell in love with it. The circus itself seems absolutely beautiful, with the magic and the elegant grandeur of it as a whole.

I picked up your book from the library after two of my friends recommended it and immediately fell in love with the artwork of the book. I felt that the art summed up the book entirely and wondered if you had any part of it as you are an artist?

Did you base the circus or/and the characters you wrote about on anyone or thing in real life?

How did the rivalry of Alexander and Prospero begin?

Do you think Alexander's students always had an advantage because of his subtle nature? I always noticed how different he was compared to Prospero especially at the end with Widget.

Does something end up happening with Poppet and Bailey?

I enjoyed your book very much. Thank you for the journey.

This quote towards the end when Alexander is talking with Widget was one of my favorite parts of the book and really resonated with me: "It is important," the man in the grey suit interrupts. "Someone needs to tell those tales. When battles are fought and won and lost, when pirates find their treasures and the dragons eat their foes for breakfast over a nice cup of Lapsang souchong, someone needs to tell their bits of overlapping narrative. There's magic in that. It's in the listener, and for each and every ear it will be different, and it will affect them in ways they can never predict. From the mundane to the profound. You may tell a tale that takes up residence in someone's soul, becomes their blood and self and purpose. That tale will move them and drive them and who knows what they might do because of it. Because of your words. This is your role, your gift. Your sister may be able to see the future, but you can shape it, do not forget that. . . There are many kinds of magic, after all." Thanks for sharing your magic with us, Erin. -Jessica

Hi Noemi, just thought I'd answer this to avoid overburdening Erin ;)
This is linked to Shakespeare's The Tempest: one of the main characters is called Prospero, he's a magician of sorts, and his daughter is called Miranda. That's why the Night Circus's Prospero wanted his daughter to be called Miranda too.

You're giving away 150 copies of your amazing book, but only for the people in US of A?How unfair is that?I mean,I really want to read this book, and it's still not available in my city, can't you giveaway more copies of the book for the people who are not in the US?That'd be really kind.Thanks.

Hi Komal, It's not Erin offering the books, but her publisher, Vintage/Anchor. They only have the rights to promote the book in the US, which is why the giveaway is limited to US only. One of my goals is to get more international publishers to offer books for giveaways. Hopefully that will happen in the future.

Erin - Your book was a gift given to me last Christmas from my father-in-law, Bill Starkey who past away on March 28th of this year at the age of 59. I finally sat down to read the book a week after his passing. I kept calling The Night Circus "Bill's book". I took my time enjoying each page of poetry, as I wish I could have told him about how much I loved reading this magical masterpiece! Thank you Erin for this journey outside of my grief. It lifted my heart! And, as always, thanks Bill for the book, but the greatest gift you ever gave me was your son, my husband, who make's each of my days magical!
