Lady By the Lake:
Jan 24, 2012 10:40AM
q Sarah, I love the cover of your book! That red hat amongst the black is striking. Any significance to the story?

Lady By the Lake:
Jan 24, 2012 11:21AM
I, for one, am enjoying seeing that published authors go through these types of issues and still emit humor!! :)
Erika Robuck:
Jan 24, 2012 11:22AM
I'm here with grammatical issues as well, apparently.
Lori Parker:
Jan 24, 2012 11:22AM
It's all good. We can still "chat."
Erika Marks:
Jan 24, 2012 11:23AM
That's two Erikas in the house now. Do we have any more?
Jael McHenry:

Poof Books:

Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 11:25AM
Once more, THANK YOU ALL for bearing with us. Feel free to throw Qs into the chat at will. One way or another we'll get you answers.
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 11:26AM
Nothing here. But I say save the show tunes for the end. ;)
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 11:26AM
Okay!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 11:26AM
Just talked to Patrick on the phone.
Patrick Brown:
Jan 24, 2012 11:26AM
Jael: go ahead and kill your feed. We're going to release a fix that might get video up.
Lori Parker:
Jan 24, 2012 11:26AM
I vote show tunes w jazz hands!
Patrick Brown:
Jan 24, 2012 11:26AM
In the meantime, please feel free to do some text chatting. Sorry again for the inconveneicne.
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 11:27AM
OK, feed killed.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 11:27AM
Goodreads is working on getting both our video feeds up ASAP but in the meantime, let's not waste anymore time! Let's do some Q&As on here!
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 11:27AM
Sarah, the first question I saw is for you, do you want to go ahead and take it?
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 11:27AM
Going back-- to Kathy Parker-- who was my favorite character in the book and why?
Natalia Sylvester:
Jan 24, 2012 11:27AM
Jazz hands always make everything amazing :)
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 11:28AM
q: Jael, in your book, did you know the ending before you started writing or did it come to you in an "A-ha!" moment?
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 11:28AM
I loved them both equally-- Elsie and Reba. Such different women. Both so torn and haunted by so much and making hard decisions in their lives.
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 11:29AM
Great answer, Sarah. We get SO attached to our characters, I think.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 11:29AM
They were both easy and hard to write because they asked me to dip into my own psyche and question my world. If that makes sense.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 11:29AM
I'm grateful to them for that
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 11:30AM
We do--so attached!
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 11:30AM
It makes perfect sense to me, Sarah! Shall I take the next one?
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 11:31AM
Let's see, shall I go next?
Erika Robuck:
Jan 24, 2012 11:31AM
I like hearing about when characters change their authors, or at least inspire them to dig deeper. Where do you draw the line as far as using material/people from your lives in your fiction?
Teresa:
Jan 24, 2012 11:31AM
q so does that mean there are bits of you in each of them?
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 11:31AM
oops, now I'm technically difficult in text too, repeating myself. Sorry bout that.
Erika Robuck:
Jan 24, 2012 11:31AM
q 0 minutes ago I like hearing about when characters change their authors, or at least inspire them to dig deeper. Where do you draw the line as far as using material/people from your lives in your fiction?
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 11:31AM
I've got a Q here from Kathy S about why I chose to have the main character of The Kitchen Daughter be autistic.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 11:31AM
This answers Kathy and Lori's questions: I started journaling about this "German in El Paso" idea in summer 2007 so... it took a long time. Years of living and loving these characters!
Beth Hoffman:
Jan 24, 2012 11:32AM
Hey you two! I finally got on. Goodreads seems to have a bit of a glitch and there is no video (yet). Anyway, Hi!
Patrick Brown:
Jan 24, 2012 11:32AM
Jael and Sarah: One more time, try reloading your page and click "start broadcasting" again.
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 11:32AM
That can be a really long answer! So let me give the shorter version.
Patrick Brown:
Jan 24, 2012 11:32AM
Just note, you might see yourself twice. Everybody else should just see you once. :)
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 11:32AM
And now, I'm writing my 3rd book and carrying those characters around with me day by day. The gestation on novels is crazy long.
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 11:32AM
Oh, wait, hold on for that answer while we try video once more.
Kathy Parker:
Jan 24, 2012 11:32AM
Thank you Sarah! @marianslibrary
Natalia Sylvester:
Jan 24, 2012 11:33AM
I second Erika's question--good one about where to draw the line when using people/material from your lives when building characters.
Natalia Sylvester:
Jan 24, 2012 11:33AM

q: How has Twitter and other social media helped you as authors? Has it impacted how you write?
Rebecca Haigh:
Jan 24, 2012 11:56AM
Great anology Jael!
Rebecca Haigh:
Jan 24, 2012 11:57AM
Great analogy , Jael! (Sorry I should have used my spell check!)
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 11:58AM
Are we frozen? ;)
Jessica McCann:
Jan 24, 2012 11:59AM
Yes.
Poof Books:
Jan 24, 2012 11:59AM
q Jael or Sarah was is something the published writer would share with the unpublished writer if we could go back in time?
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 11:59AM
wow, it really does freeze on the MOST unflattering faces.
Patrick Brown:
Jan 24, 2012 11:59AM
Jael is not frozen, but Sarah looks like she might be.
Jessica McCann:
Jan 24, 2012 11:59AM
You're back!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 11:59AM
Boo
Lori Parker:
Jan 24, 2012 11:59AM
Ha! You both look great!
Patrick Brown:
Jan 24, 2012 11:59AM
Try reloading again, Sarah.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 11:59AM
I loved Jael's analogy too. Love being butta!
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:00PM
I would love it if the screen came unfrozen and Sarah is chugging straight from the champagne bottle. ;)
Teresa:
Jan 24, 2012 12:00PM
Oh no!
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:00PM
To give proper credit for the butter in the cookie analogy, Carolyn Parkhurst is the one I first heard it from. (Only steal from the best!)
Teresa:
Jan 24, 2012 12:00PM
Ha! That would be great wouldn't it Hallie!
Jessica McCann:
Jan 24, 2012 12:01PM
You crack me up, Hallie!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:01PM
AHahaha, Hallie! You would!! Well, with all the technical difficulties, you may get your wish!
Teresa:
Jan 24, 2012 12:01PM
I seem to have lost both ladies.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:01PM
Sadly, our hour is up and we spent most of it working on the video. So sorry friends!
Teresa:
Jan 24, 2012 12:01PM
Sarah, you can blame it on me. I did ask you to have some for me :)
Rebecca Haigh:
Jan 24, 2012 12:01PM
I can only see Jael!
Fran:
Jan 24, 2012 12:02PM
Are you Skyping or using a cable service & phone?
Patrick Brown:
Jan 24, 2012 12:02PM
Had you both for a second there but now you're gone.
Lori Parker:
Jan 24, 2012 12:02PM
Chugging the champagne... hhahhaha!
Erika Marks:
Jan 24, 2012 12:02PM
Cheers to you both, ladies!!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:02PM
If you stick around we'll do our best to answer more Qs!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:02PM
Thank you, Erika!
Natalia Sylvester:
Jan 24, 2012 12:03PM
Sorry to have to leave. Enjoy the party, ladies! Thanks for the great talk!
Erika Robuck:
Jan 24, 2012 12:03PM
Cheers to you both! I have to head out for a phone call. Best wishes on your launches--first and second time around. :)
Jessica McCann:
Jan 24, 2012 12:03PM
Way to hang tough, you guys. We appreciate it. Thanks for the insights!
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:03PM
I ain't gonna quit you!!! (Okay, maybe I have had too much tea.)
Teresa:
Jan 24, 2012 12:04PM
I'm still here
Jessica McCann:
Jan 24, 2012 12:04PM
q For those of us who need to run, maybe you can answer some of the questions here in the written chat, so we can come back and read later. :)
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:05PM
q: Ladies, this is for both of you. How many drafts did you write before you began querying your books? When did you know it was the final draft?
Lori Parker:
Jan 24, 2012 12:05PM
Congratulations to you both!! And a gold star for not swearing into the mike. =)
Christy Fore:
Jan 24, 2012 12:05PM
q: You ladies are making me hungry with all these baking analogies! Sarah, which of Elsie's recipes is your favorite?
Fran:
Jan 24, 2012 12:09PM
A+ effort. Thanks for the invitation to the chat. I'm looking forward to reading your books.
Kathy Parker:
Jan 24, 2012 12:10PM
Cheers to you both ladies!! Clink, clink!
Teresa:
Jan 24, 2012 12:10PM
Have we given up?
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:11PM
Gorgeous!!!!!
Rebecca Haigh:
Jan 24, 2012 12:13PM
Congratulations ladies and thank you!
Kathy Parker:
Jan 24, 2012 12:13PM
q: Will either of you be visiting Anderson's Book Shop in Naperville, IL anytime soon? @marianslibrary
Teresa:
Jan 24, 2012 12:14PM
thanks ladies!
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:14PM
Thanks again SO much for attending, everybody!
Kathy Parker:
Jan 24, 2012 12:14PM
Thank you Sarah & Jael!
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:15PM
We're both going to try answering some questions here in the chatroom...
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:15PM
Gush-fest: Um, isn't Jael the dearest, loveliest friend! This butta absolutely adores her sugar. ;)
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:15PM
Thank you ALL for popping in and staying with us through all the glitches!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:16PM
Kathy--re: Anderson's Book Shop. I don't have plans to but you never know! I'm going to be touring for the next year, I suspect. Perhaps, perhaps.
Beth Hoffman:
Jan 24, 2012 12:16PM
Thank you Jael and Sarah!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:17PM
CHRISTY FORE!! I heart you for being here. My amazing person friend.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:17PM
Thank YOU, Beth!!!! Sending hugs and love your way!
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:18PM
re: Anderson's as well, I don't have any immediate plans to visit but I do have family in the area so it's certainly not too farfetched.
Kathy Parker:
Jan 24, 2012 12:18PM
Hope so Sarah because Sarah @prsarahevans & I are hoping to meet you soon!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:18PM
Saving CeeCee Honeycutt author, Beth Hoffman. Go get her book, people. She is butter and sugar and all the best spices. ;)
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:18PM
The next few in-person visits I have scheduled are in Arlington VA (One More Page), Philly (The Spiral Bookcase), and the Virginia Festival of the Book in Charlottesville.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:19PM
Christy-- I can't pick a favorite recipe. That'd be like picking a favorite tea and you ALL know that's impossible for this gal.
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:19PM
For Hallie's question about how many drafts we wrote of our books, I have to say I kind of lost count. It was a LOT.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:19PM
Jael and I will be together at The Spiral Bookcase in Philadelphia! Come on out!
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:20PM
There were so many times I thought I was done, and then stepped back for a while or gave it to my agent or another trusted reader, and they pointed out things that would make the book stronger, so I set to work again.
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:20PM
I was afraid of that answer.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:20PM
I'll be in Dallas then Boston's Concord Bookshop, followed by Novel Places in MD, One More Page in Arlington, VA... and so on. Check my website for the book tour sched.
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:21PM
But all told, I started writing the book in the fall of 2007, it sold to S&S in fall of 2009, and came out in the spring of 2011. (And in paperback just last month!)
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:21PM
Re: Hallie's Q. I 110% agree with Jael. I have so many drafts of both my novels that I packed them up in shipping boxes in the garage! No room for them in my house.
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:21PM
Oh, I LOVE Concord Bookshop. Say Hi to Dawn for me.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:21PM
So if that gives you an idea...
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:21PM
I will! Yes, Dawn is organizing it all for me. Ain't she the bestest!
Lady By the Lake:
Jan 24, 2012 12:22PM
Can't wait!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:22PM
Oo, Lady By the Lake--you asked about the dedication of THE BAKER'S DAUGHTER right?
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:22PM
Tee hee. Well now, that is a story.
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:23PM
I hear there are people who can get a book right the first time, but I am not one of them! I discover while I write, so I always need several drafts.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:23PM
My husband is Brian. So the book is dedicated to him and in German, it says, "Check, please, my darling. I love you."
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:23PM
Q: So you write a draft, print the whole thing out, red pen the HELL out of it. Fix, print, red pen, repeat?
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:24PM
I journal for about 3-6 months. Map out the story. Then I write it out in a word document. I take a month away from it when that is complete. Then yes, print it out, mark the hell out of it, cut whole chapters, then revise.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:25PM
I then send it to my one "trusted reader friend" who happens to be on this thread this very minute (ahem, you know who you are) and she reads, marks the HELL out of it and tells me what's working emotionally, plot-wise, etc. She tells me how the story is flowing form a READER not a writer perspective, which is extremely helpful.
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:25PM
Hallie, I do my editing both on the computer and on paper, depending on where I am in the process. There are color-coded Post-Its involved. If I am making major revisions (for example, at one point Amanda lived in LA, not NJ) I do that on the computer.
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:26PM
Trusted reader friends are SO important!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:26PM
Then I revise again a couple of times before it goes to my agent. SHE MARKS THE HELL OUT OF IT. Then I revised based on that before we send to editor who... yes, marks the hell out of it and I revise again...
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:26PM
I think you get the cycle--haha! Revisions. They never stop until the book is on its way to the production line.
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:27PM
I see one more question from Poof Books I wanted to make sure we answer...
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:27PM
"Jael or Sarah was is something the published writer would share with the unpublished writer if we could go back in time?"
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:27PM
Q: Sarah: Is the champagne gone yet?
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:27PM
Trusted friends are so VITALLY important. And mine happens to have absolutely nothing to do with the publishing business. She keeps me grounded. She keeps me sane. She keeps the story REAL by telling me when it sounds too "writerly" and such.
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:27PM
For me, definitely -- I spent more than 10 years actively trying to get published, writing different books, pitching them to different agents, and so on....
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:28PM
... and I want to tell my past self not to get discouraged, because when it finally happens, it'll be at the right time, with the right book, for the right reasons.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:28PM
Hallie--ha! No, but I've gulped down that enormous cup of tea. Is my cup really that big to ya'll? I thought it was normal. But then, I drink a LOT of tea.
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:29PM
It can take a really long time to break through and that's not always bad.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:30PM
Ditto, Jael. Absolutely spot on advice to my unpublished younger self. I was so... desperate feeling sometimes that it nearly made me crazy. Desperate to be published. Desperate to move forward in my career N.O.W. But I'd go back and tell young Sarah, chill out, babe. Fate has a plan that's much better than whatever insanity you're cooking up in your head.
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:30PM
Yes it probably looks big but only because you are just a wee thing. It is the perfect mug o' tea, though! Bigger is better right.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:30PM
Not bad at all. You become seasoned by the struggle, by the journey, to your dreams.
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:30PM
Great advice ladies.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:31PM
Bigger is most certainly better. I do live in Texas. ;)
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:31PM
I see we still have a TON of people in the chat room. Thank you guys for staying so long and please, please ask us questions!
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:32PM
I am so glad we got the chance to do this today!
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:32PM
Big hugs over the wires to Sarah and a great big thank you to Goodreads for hosting our festivities.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:33PM
Me too! Lord, we are going to have a hoot of a time in Philadelphia, woman. Seriously. And then I can HUG your little bump--and you too, of course. ;)
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:33PM
Q; What has been the most surprising thing about becoming published? Good and bad?
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:34PM
You said it, my dear. Hugs and love to you and thank you for helping me ring in THE BAKER'S DAUGHTER's birthday! You know our "daughters" are BFFs now. xoxo
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:34PM
Most surprising thing... hmm...
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:34PM
Hallie, what has really surprised me is how generous and welcoming other published writers have been. You can look at publishing as a very competitive thing, only a certain number of slots, etc., but in my experience there has been so much community rather than competition.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:34PM
That your world really doesn't change too drastically. You still get up and walk your dog. You still have to do laundry-- you couldn't see it in the video but I have a PILE right beyond the screen. Haha
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:35PM
You still make dinner for your husband and fret about getting more luncheon meat at the store before the week begins.
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:35PM
On the negative side, I told myself I wasn't going to be one of those writers who got totally obsessive about sales rank and reviews and what people were saying about me on the internet... and then I totally did.
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:36PM
(That only lasted a couple months, thank goodness. I'm feeling much better now.)
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:37PM
Also, I totally agree with Sarah about how life doesn't change. Laundry, lunchmeat, etc., everything that needed to be done before still needs to be done after.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:37PM
Sometimes (pre-published) you think that once you are published, rainbows and starbursts will fill your days but really... the work is still there. The writing is still calling you. You don't stop. It's a nice surprise in its way. Because it reminds you that no matter what comes (good or bad), you are still YOU. Your loved ones are the same. Your friends, etc.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:38PM
And I agree with Jael about how absolutely fabulous our writing community is. It is so welcoming and embracing with SO many cheerleaders. I love that.
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:39PM
OK, speaking of life going on -- I need to get going!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:39PM
I love that I've found this community on Goodreads, Twitter and Facebook that is REAL and ready to embrace each other not just in the social spheres but in person. We're huggers. It's wonderful.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:39PM
Yes! Thank you Jael!! You made my day, sister!
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:40PM
The writing community is one of MOST supportive groups of people out there. I think it is wonderful when the unpublished and the published can chat without egos getting in the way!
Jael McHenry:
Jan 24, 2012 12:40PM
Goodbye, all, see you online! And Sarah, see you in Philly!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:40PM
I'll stick around for a few minutes longer to see if anybody has any questions for me or THE BAKER'S DAUGHTER, specifically.
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:40PM
Bye, Jael! Thanks so much for the chat! This was so fun!
Lady By the Lake:
Jan 24, 2012 12:41PM
Thank you, ladies. It was delightful to read your answers!
Rebecca Haigh:
Jan 24, 2012 12:41PM
Jael and Sarah, you have been wonderful. Thank you for making my afternoon fun and interesting!
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:41PM
It might just be me and you Sarah! I'm like the last party guest that just won't leave. Ha!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:41PM
It's a date, my friend. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27 at Spiral Bookcase in Philly. Hugs until then.
Lady By the Lake:
Jan 24, 2012 12:41PM
q Sarah: How did you choose such a striking cover to your book?
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:42PM
Thanks Lady By the Lake, Rebecca and Hallie!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:42PM
You know, I didn't. I was totally surprised when the designer sent me the proof.
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:42PM
Q: How was writing The Baker's Daughter different from your first book? What did you do differently? Or did you?
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:43PM
At first, I was kind of torn about it... I'm a bright, light woman and it was dark and mysterious and that red hat just STARING me down.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:44PM
Then the more I looked at it, the more I fell in love and realized how perfectly fitting it was. The darkness, the train tracks in the background, the baker's shop plaid, etc. I loved it!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:44PM
AND THAT RED HAT! It totally echoed a point in the story with one of the characters.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:45PM
I have no purchased, as you may have seen in the background of my video feed, a matching red hat for the book tour and encourage any and all friends to do the same. We'll have a red hat extravaganza!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:45PM
Hallie--my first book was set in Puerto Rico in 1960 and the research for that came mostly from my family.
Rebecca Haigh:
Jan 24, 2012 12:46PM
Sounds fascinating, I will have to read just to find out how a red hat fits into the story!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:46PM
My aunts, my mother, my grandparents and our family home in Puerto Rico.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:46PM
If you can tell... I'm a closet history buff. I LOVE collecting tidbits of information, especially facts that are unknown or secretive.
Lady By the Lake:
Jan 24, 2012 12:47PM
Great idea! Although the Red Hat Society (for women age 50 and older) might get totally confused by such a young thing as you wearing their signature-colored hat!!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:47PM
So I did that for my first book and my second, but the material was completely different.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:47PM
For my second book, it was lots of digging to even get the information.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:48PM
There's so little about the Lebensborn program. Even less about German basic day-to-day living in Germany during WWII.
Lady By the Lake:
Jan 24, 2012 12:48PM
I look forward to snuggling in this weekend and reading The Baker's Daughter! Looking for the red hat and its meaning in the story!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:49PM
It was a harder subject to tackle. We know the atrocities. Those are documented. We know what horrific circumstances the Jewish population endured. But I kept wondering--what about the German people. They were there. They were living RIGHT there. What was going through their minds?
Lady By the Lake:
Jan 24, 2012 12:49PM
Thank you for touch on a subject that is still tender to many people around the world.
Lady By the Lake:
Jan 24, 2012 12:49PM
"touching"
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:50PM
I say no age limitations: RED HATS FOR EVERYBODY. I may even go make up some T-shirts for it. Haha
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:50PM
Thank you, Lady By the Lake! I'm so honored and thrilled that you enjoyed THE BAKER'S DAUGHTER--that it resonated and touched you so deeply.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:52PM
I don't think she's still on here, but I wanted to shout out to Kathy Parker (@marianslibrary) that my treat for today is snuggling up with some Turner Classic Movie watching. ;))))
Lady By the Lake:
Jan 24, 2012 12:52PM
My hat is off to you! Looking forward to seeing you soon and again... Congratulations!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:52PM
As well, so thrilled to see my Poofbooks popping in. Hugs to you in Chicago, my dear.
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:53PM
My family is from Germany-my great grandfather's name was Adolph. I would love to find some old letters and scrounge through my family's history books to find out how my relatives dealt with it. (My grandmother's maiden name was Schmidt, btw!)
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:53PM
Jess McCain, I do believe you and I (and Melissa C) may get to lunch together at the Tucson Festival of Books. Looking forward to it, darlin'.
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:54PM
WWII is a part of world history that has so many untold stories.
Kathy Parker:
Jan 24, 2012 12:54PM
Just got back on to catch up! Yes, Sarah, TCM is a perfect way to spend a cold winter evening! :) I'll be curled up by the fire reading The Baker's Daugher. :)
Hallie Sawyer:
Jan 24, 2012 12:54PM
Alright, checking out! XO
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:55PM
Really, Hallie! How fascinating!! I'm deep into my 3rd novel writing now, which is a present-day story set in Virginia/Metro DC area. But I've already started collecting tidbits (i.e. scrounging around) for my 4th novel idea--which is more historical in nature. I LOVE doing the researching. You should absolutely try to discover your grandparent's history.
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:56PM
Oh, Kathy, you make me smile!! I pray you enjoy my book baby!
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:56PM
Thanks for coming, Hallie, and for the amazing questions! I'm sure I'll be tweeting and facebooking with you soon, girlie. xox
Sarah McCoy:
Jan 24, 2012 12:59PM
