What are those smells and aromas that make your summer special.
NOTE: Took me about 15 minutes to name this topic and not have it look like an insult to our moderator.
Anyhow some of my summertime smells that will always make the season special ...
the smell of freshly mown grass (particularly if its on a golf course)...
the smell of cocoanut oil sun tan lotion especially next to the beach...
the smell of fireworks smoke lingering in the air after a show....

Today on my bike ride, the air was redolent with the scent of honey, which was rolling off all the clover in the grass.

Only in my mind, Dave. It's nice!

In my mind I'm going to Carolina...
Where the air is redolent of honey rolling in waves of scent from the blooming clover.
Ahhhh. Thanks Jackie, I've been having a cranky day but that helped.

Fantastic topic. I had a little mini brain vacation just now, thinking through all the wonderful smells I know.
*sigh, stretch, rolls over to nice dream filled sleep*

Freshly sliced cucumber.
The leaves of a tomato plant.
The air just as the weather changes from hot and sunny to clouds-and-storms-rolling-in.
Ocean tidepools. (Everything I read suggests they stink...but that's all fiction. It's really just the ocean, but you get to walk out on top of it.)
Overgrown roses planted a hundred years ago when Portland was first called the Rose City.
Barbecue grills. Smoked meat. Grilled hamburger.
Raw sweet corn so fresh that you pop a kernel and it looks like whole milk dripping out.
On a day that's too miserably hot to do anything else, the smell of popcorn with "buttery topping" in a nice, chilly movie theater.
After that miserably hot day, the smell of the cool air that takes over because it's so rarely humid in portland, that a 98-degree day often comes with a 65-degree night.
Warm rain.
Popsicles. The local farmer's market has a bicycle-powered cart for Sol-pops (Sustainable, Organic, Local), and their most popular flavor is cucumber-lime-jalapeno. They do have some basics like mango-lime and no-added-sugar strawberry-apple-cider. Two weeks ago, having noticed that the cuke one (cucumber is my favorite flavor ever) was there every week, I decided to try the sugar-snap-pea-sour-orange pop instead. I loved it, though it was probably 10% more vegetal than I prefer my sweet treats. I was totally inspired to develop an orange vinaigrette when my sugar snap peas are ready to harvest. This week, crazy hot, they were all sold out by the time I got there. They came back with a second batch, but no cucumber. So I had pear-ginger. Unbelievable, pear-sweet with a pear's vanilla notes, but more spicy-ginger than anything else. It made me want to suggest to them that they try using Japanese pickled ginger with something.
Rainier cherries. Sweet, mild, complex, not overpowering like Bings. Bell peppers. Lime juice, mangoes, avocado with cumin.

Not to cross threads but I love the smell of the air after a summer thunderstorm has gone through.

I like stepping out my front door and inhaling. Our condo neighborhood is very landscaped, and the result is a cornucopia of delightful scents from all the varying flora.
However, my favorite smell of summer is freshly-cut grass. It smells like watermelon to me.
When I was younger, my grandparents used to live on the Chestatee River. We had a swimming hole about a mile from their house, deep in the mountain; that's the most magical place of my existence, and the moist, earthy scent of land and water coming together gives me chills when I remember it.

I agree with Jackie. That is also my favorite summer smell.

I like rain on hot driveway or poolside asphalt. And the smell of a thunderstorm in general. Also, to second Charly's notion of fireworks aftermath in the air on the fourth.

Sally,
We often go to the Pawtucket Red Sox game one the 3rd 4th or 5th as they have an extraveganza each night after the game. a good 20 minutes with accompanying patriotic music. The stadium is sort of a horse shoe and you can actually feel the concussion of the explosions.
In the end we usually walk to the car in the lingering haze and aroma of the spent gala.
Editorial note on the cut grass thing, prefer that it be someone else besides mine!!!!!

I learned a new word today:
Petrichor--the smell of freshly fallen rain coming off the sidewalk.

Cool! I like that smell, and I like new words so its all good.
Okay I googled it and it gets even cooler
The term was coined in 1964 by two Australian researchers, Bear and Thomas, for an article in the journal Nature. In the article, the authors describe how the smell derives from an oil exuded by certain plants during dry periods, whereupon it is adsorbed by clay-based soils and rocks. During rain, the oil is released into the air along with another compound, geosmin, producing the distinctive scent. In a follow-up paper, Bear and Thomas (1965) showed that the oil retards seed germination and early plant growth.
Geosmin is a chemical that gives beets, catfish, and carp their earthy taste, and it breaks down in acid, which is why pickled beets don't taste as earthy.

Wow, this is the most interesting factoid that I've learned in more than a little while. Thanks BW!

Huh...I wouldn't have thought of it that way, but now that you ask, it can taste a little earthy.
But I was back on favorite summer smells. :)

I'm the mower lady. Bummer.
If they sold a scent of mowed grass, and it matched, I would buy it. They have summer rain, but alas, it doesn't match.

It smells even better from the pool after just cutting the grass. Still smells best on the golf course.
