Chat Feature?

Hi, don't know if this has been discussed before, but has Goodreads thought of adding chat rooms? I have looked EVERYWHERE for good book chat and have been crazy unsuccessful. There are so many great people on this site! I think it would be an awesome addition.
Thanks!

Flagging a post will send it to the Goodreads Customer Care team for review. We take abuse seriously in our discussion boards. Only flag comments that clearly need our attention. As a general rule we do not censor any content on the site. The only content we will consider removing is spam, slanderous attacks on other members, or extremely offensive content (eg. pornography, pro-Nazi, child abuse, etc). We will not remove any content for bad language alone, or being critical of a particular book.

I vote for this feature, too! I've done the same thing--looked everywhere and cannot find a chat just for books. I'm an agoraphobe, and it would be nice to have real-time discussions with someone online about books.

Great suggestion! We haven't heard a ton of requests for this one - so its good to hear some people are interested in it.

I'm not at all interested. I'd rather read considered and well-written comments on books. Hard to write well at the frenetic pace of chat.

I can see both sides of this one. It might be nice to talk real-time to some of the cool people I've met here, but I can also see how it could be a bit of a nuisance.
Maybe it could be a Groups feature that a mod could enable or disable?

Goodreads may not have designated chat BUT our one group has done "live" chats on topics by setting a time which spans the time zones as comfortably as possible and then everyone just shows up and posts like mad -- it works the same as chat or very nearly so. It was great fun the one time I joined in. There were no noticable lags which resulted in a very lively conversation.
Just a thought!

My first thought was: GREAT IDEA !!
Then I read the comments.
And now I'm torn. One one hand I would like to chat with some of the people I met so far. To be honest I don't always talk about books :-) Exxample If you talk about a cookbook you also want to exchange about experience....
And if you read the comment from Becca then you may understand that there are more reasons to get a chat feature.
My conclusion: I would like to get a chat feature. For me it's one more opportunity to talk about books and more.
How to implement: Add a chatroom to each account like a bookshelf. Account owner is responsible. He gets authorization to invite people for a chat. Just in the way if you want to add a friend.
Then evrybody is free to use or not.
So people like me and Becca can use it and people like Ruth don't use it.
One more idea: Myabe it's possible to add a flag to every account: Interested in chat yes or no.

Ruth, you and I used to use the chat feature on our old board. Not much, and rarely was it about books. I think chat is fun when you know someone pretty well and you just want to gossip. But you could always get your core of friends to agree to AIM or something and use that. Why re-invent the wheel? Just a thought. I'm playing devil's advocate in both directions here.

Back in the very early days of constant reader, we had some great chat sessions. A date and time were picked and everyone who could showed up. It was fun just to talk, very different from the composed note process. It's not a huge goodreads priority for me but I can imagine it being fun occasionally.

I dono, I think it's better to just have groups for different books and friends. Because, there's kids on this thing and predators could get in there. And also, wouldn't it be reducing Goodreads to MySpace?

I'd be very happy for this to be added!

I have to be honest. I'm not really that worried about predators. Because:
1) I'd know a creep when I'd 'talk' to him
2) There aren't too many people who know about this site, because
3) It's a website for book lovers and people who like to write
4) And saying that...I would think that predators would be a lot easier to...catch...on a book website, and why would they join one anyway, it's about books, what would they say, "Hey, we have books in common want to meet in real life and discuss them?"
5) When we make our profiles private they are COMPLETELY private except for our friends, and if
they turn out to not be very nice people, we can delete them and never talk to them again. :)
Sorry. I make it sound like predatory butt heads aren't a very big problem on the internet. Of course there ARE people who are rude and who swear on goodreads, I just have had the fortune of not 'meeting' many of them.
That said, I vote for a chat room type thing with LOTS of responsible moderators who would keep the discussions appropriate and out any creeps.

I agree with Lunawolf and Edifanob. We could have like this chat-room feature on the -edit your profile- thing and if you want to use it, fine, you can go in a chat room and blubber.
Or you could just chat with people online in a group. There could be this -chat room- link thing on the homepage of the group, and people can express ideas together, pure and no editing.
And while this could end up like myspace, that is a high doubt because goodreads is a small community with writing and book lovers! And myspace is just a fling website that most people use for bullying ore whatev. Besides, in the chat rooms, there could be this 'flag abuse' thing and if one of your comments was flagged innapropriate or abusive, you could be banned from live chat for a month or whatsoever, like a 3-strike thing and then you can't chat on your account anymore. Of course, all the comments flagged
would have to be reviewed, but so far, I never seen a comment flagged. That shoudn't be a problem. :3

Lunawolf, you have a point there. But predators at good at what they do, and at the beginning you might not be able to tell. They could have a much of similar books, and maybe stir them in with adult ones. I mean, theres not a questionaire about every single book to prove that you read it. But your right about it not being like Myspace, and you can delete it. And of course, there'd be wonderful mods to help out, but they can only do so much. I still wouldn't be that confortable with it. Otherwise though, it's a good idea.

The internet is the internet. There are good people and bad people, everywhere. One of the reasons I am in favor of the chat feature is that I want to avoid places like myspace, where if you try to talk about something intelligent, you get laughed out of the place. We can't just stick our heads in the sand and say, "oh we can't chat, there might be predators." As several people have already said, there would be moderators. I personally have never seen an inappropriate post on any of the groups I am a member of. I think 99% of the people here are mature, normal people who love books. Why deprive ourselves of a cool feature because we are scared something MIGHT happen?

OK if you do it the way I mentioned in another thread you could have a feature like Gmail has ....you automatically can see when your friends are on gmail and can open a chat, the only bad thing about it is you have to open a new window for each person you wish to chat with, you could also make it so you could turn it on and off in our profiles, that way those who don't want to be bothered wont be. Just a thought. I have met many great people on here and we have emailed back and forth , it would be fun to be able to just click and chat for a bit.
