1 We just launched a huge new feature - ordering your to-read list! I just spent 10minutes on mine and am thoroughly convinced this is the coolest thing we've launched all year :)

You can make any shelf you want orderable (is that a word?) by going into your 'edit shelves' page.

Have fun :)

And let us know if there are any issues!

83445 Oh, I can't wait to play. I am so excited. Thank you so much!!! (Boy, do I have a lot of work to do. ha ha)

Edit:

Otis, I just went in and looked at your shelf.

Ok, this will be very cool. In my case, I'll have "little" batches of 200 each. ;-)

This is going to be so cool. I really appreciate this feature!

87906 Super! But how do you do it, though? I went to the edit mode for my to-read shelf, but then I don't know what to do next.

171430 You need to use the "main" view to see the arrows that allow you to change the order. If you still don't see them, click on "order" and they should show up.

VERY cool, Otis!. :D

87906 Ah, I see. I thought it would be on the "edit" view. Thanks, Rivka!

171430 So did I. When it wasn't, I went hunting. Fortunately, I started with the first view. ;)

83445 I came back (tore myself away from ordering my to-read list) to report what Rivka has already shared. We order from the main view. Thanks again!

193297 Fantastic! Now I can order the TBR books in Constant Reader by month. It works for groups, doesn't it?

193297 I don't think it works for group shelves. Is it all right to ask for that feature already? I feel like such an ingrate.

61943 How come my order list seems to skip a couple of numbers? Mine goes from 1 to 3, skipping 2. Also, when I moved a book from the "to-read" list to my "currently-reading" list, the number of books in my to-read list didn't update from 43 to 42, and when I added another one, now it says 44. Also, my currently-reading list says I'm reading 4 books, but only has 3 on the list (2 were there, then I moved one from my to-read list).

83445 Yes, I came in here with one of the same bugs. Haven't moved any books between read, currently reading, and to-read shelves since I started ordering my to-read list and currently reading list. But, all of a sudden instead of having 5 books in my currently reading list, my shelf says I have 7. (I think I have 5.) I put them in order and they go: 1, 2, 5, 6, 7.

No problems that I've seen (but I might not have noticed with my to-read list) and I'm up to ordering 29 of 1,347 & counting. Am thinking I will order only my first 200 to-read books.

Otis, maybe this is a bug that can just be fixed, but feel free to go into my record to check out the discrepancy between the actual (5) number and the number the currently reading shelf says I have (7).

Thanks for any help.

Oh, I can can order from main or list views. And when I'm in those two views it shows the order numbers of the books in my to-read (and now currently reading) list(s) but the edit arrows are there. The order field does not show for me in any other view, even when I click in that area. (And can't just see a list with the numbers that you show Otis.) So, if anybody knows what I'm doing wrong here, please let me know what, including any instructions. Thanks so much.

442382 You can "fill the gaps" when a shelf skips numbers. For example, with Lisa's currently reading list numbered 1,2,5,6,7 hitting the move up arrow next to book #5 will put the book in the #4 spot and hitting the up arrow again will move it to the #3 spot. However, the shelf will probably continue to think there are 7 books.

(And yes, I am OCD enough that when my 100 book list skipped #83 & put what should have been number 83 at 101, I did move #83 up to its correct place & then proceeded to scootch all the rest up one number so they all got to the correct number.)

83445 Liz, You're right. I had to move up all 3 out of order books but now they do say 1-5. But my currently reading shelf shows 7 books, not the 5 that are there.

Is this a caching issue? I hope. I'm OCD enough that this will drive me a tad crazy if my stats are always off like this.

Any information/help very much appreciated.

Also, re my currently reading shelf (or any of our shelves) is there any way to undo/take off all ordering we've done? (Was thinking of doing that with my currently reading shelf to see if I can "delete" the 2 non-books.) Thanks!

834216 This looks like an absolutely great feature. A few little things that jumped out at me.

1. The Read shelf cannot be ordered. I personally don't care about this and my guess is that this is because it's usually (although not always) the largest shelf (Yes, Lisa, I'm looking at you :-)

2. One thing that will become desirable at some point is the ability to enter a desired number for a book and have it jump to that sort position. Let's assume that you have a large shelf (500 books) and at some point you add a book that should be placed at #254. It shouldn't be necessary to have to click the up/down arrows 250 times to get it into place.

3. You changed the "remove" label in the Main view to a little box with an X in it. While the hint explains what it is for and there is a confirm notice if you happen to click it, it really looks like a "selected/unselected" box to me rather than a remove and I think people will tend to click it by accident.

834216 Lisa, re: Removing ordering, my guess is that if you go into the shelf edit and "disable ordering" it will dump any custom order and when you re-enable ordering it will go back to the default which is, I think, order added. The only shelf you cannot do this for is the To-Read shelf since that shelf does not have the option for disabling ordering.

83445 Thanks Michael. I will try that with my currently reading shelf. Ordering it is not so important to me anyway.

Oh yes! Netflix has this. I have about 50 DVDs in my queue at Netflix; here at Goodreads, it would be even more important for me for my to-read list. And I'm not alone having a very long to-read list.

And I'm fine with not being able to order my read list. Although my to-read list is almost as long as my read list. Thanks mostly to this site. ;-)

83445 Michael, Well, I disabled ordering of my currently reading shelf and it now looks the way that it did, with 5 books. But when looking at my shelves it still shows 7 books on that shelf.

I'll check tomorrow and see if it's a caching issue.

If not: Otis, Might there be a fix for this glitch? Thanks.

834216 Actually, I've just noticed a bug of sorts. Before ordering was added, GR remembered the sort order one had chosen, so if you were sorting by Author on one shelf, when you went to another shelf you were still sorting by Author. Because Order is not available on all shelves, the behavior as you switch between shelves with Ordering and shelves without is a little inconsistent. For example, I start on a shelf with ordering and sort by Order. I then switch to a different shelf with ordering enabled and I am still sorting by Order. I then switch to a shelf without ordering. It defaults to sorting by date added since ordering is not an option. I change the sort order to Author. I now go back to a shelf with ordering enabled and it goes back to sorting by date added.

In fact, as far as I can tell, the only time it remembers the sort order is if you are actually sorting by Order on an ordered shelf and switch to another shelf with sorting enabled. Otherwise, it always seems to change the sort order to Date Added when you switch shelves (including going from order-disabled to order-disabled).

336421 I did a bit of moving books into order on the to-read shelf which is wreaking havoc now on keeping the read shelf in the order I want it and had it because any visit to any other shelf flips the read shelf into a default order which I have to then go back and fix.

I want to undo my ordering or turn it off or something so my choice of order on the read shelf stays no matter what other shelves I may go look at.

Everything else seems to have gone so smoothly and this one seems not so smooth at the moment.

Thanks for listening.

83445 Dottie (and All), Re your read shelf, when you go to it from your to-read shelf, can't you just change the view and then change which arrow is dominant and still see your read shelf in whatever order you want?
