Social Justice Theme
The new 8th grade curriculum is centered around the theme of Justice. So far, I've done class readings of Animal Farm, Farewell to Manzanar, and Night. The summer reading was Touching Spirit Bear and Wolf By the Ears. We have covered the Holocaust and will be learning more about other 20th and 21st century genocides.
At the moment, I am hoping to make a list of books that students can select for independent reading. Any suggestions???? Please?!?!?!
A Raisin in the Sun (Hansberry)Warriors Don't Cry (I Forget)
Civil Disobedience (Thoreau)
Running Loose (Chris Crutcher)
Um... I'll be back. My brain (as opposed to drain) is clogged...
Maus (I and II) by Art Speigleman
Flush by Carl Haissen
Buddha Boy by Kath Koje (sp?)
The Geography Club by Brett Hartinger (sp?)
Hitler's Youth (Nonfiction book, perfect for this age)
your list will need many more nonfiction titles than what I can think of right now but I'm sure there are lots of good ones out there.
I agree on sold, but if there is anyone who can't handle(or whose parents can't handle) reading about a girl who is forced into prostitution, then I wouldn't choose it.
Black and White by Paul Volponi is pretty good, although I can't from what I remember if there is any justice.
In Black and White there was no justice for the Black guy- he gets jail time and won't rat on his white best friend who is off to college.
