book discussion
topic: Can anyone tell me about this book? hiks...
I really cannot understand this book. i read most of your reviews and it says inspirational. From where i can find the meaning? Many words i cannot understand why Coelho use in his novel.

This work is an allegory. That means everything in it is symbolic. Its hero is every person who seeks life's meaning; the archetype is the fool. Along the journey (life happens), he learns wisdom. The book is essentially a map to show you how do the same thing. You are supposed to look for parallels and connections to your own experience in order to understand it.
Age is a factor, and so is religion. I teach English, and I know that students who are not exposed to many other cultures have trouble with this book. Also, understanding stories on more than one level comes with age. That's why fairy tales and fables (including allegories) have something new to offer each time you read them.
My advice is to wait a while, then pick up the book when it feels right to you, not to try to force it. Some journeys are worth the wait.
My best, Sherry
This is one of those books that can be read as a straight adventure and reread later when more experience, or maturity, or simply time for the story to fructate, will create a new and fuller experience. In a way it seems to wander, much like LIFE OF PI; I would advise any reader to relax and enjoy if it gets confusing, and let it rest to read again.
