book discussion
topic: What we eat
I read this book last month. The author describes 4 meals, beginning with a MacDonald's industrial food meal and ending with a meal entirely hunted and gathered. The most interesting is the concept of corn making up most of our food.
The book was not perfect, but I rated it highly, because it has influenced the way I shop for food, looking for more organic, more natural, and closer to home.
I loved the book. I agree with Carol in that it did influence the way I shop. Local, organic. It installed a "food ethic" in my life, and I find I never look at a piece of meat in the same way. Happy beef, happy chicken...and happy chicken eggs from local farms.
This is a terrific book, well-written and researched. I had already changed from total omnivore to dairy-less vegetarian when I read it, so it helped to reinforce my choice. However, I feel that his current book "In Defense of Food" is rather a gimme. How many times can he repeat himself? I know that he his helping move the slow food/locally grown/organic produce movement along, with which I totally agree, but it really loses it's impact when the message comes so close together. Does this mean we can expect a new book about essentially the same topic every two years?
Reading this book has changed my shopping habits as well. Before, I had tried to shop locally and organically but didn't always make it, especially with meat. But at one point while reading this book I put it down, got on line and signed up for a meat CSA membership (grass fed, of course!). We are going to pick up our first order this weekend and couldn't be more excited about it!I love this book and the way it has (re)inspired me to shop and eat!
