1283225 I'm reading Inkheart right now. Well, actually listening to it on audio. I'm trying to figure out exactly where the "real world" parts take place. The internet has given me some conflicting information. Anyone know for sure?

2026178 I got Stones at a library book sale just because I liked the cover, and for 50 cents, why not? What a treasure!

message 364: by Meg (new)

772262 I know. Don't get me wrong I liked it but I didn't love it. I am still going to read some other books from her, because I thought Stones was extraordinary.

message 363: by Elizabeth (new)

2026178 Thanks, Meg.I guess it's too much to expect 5 star reads from an author every time.

message 362: by Meg (new)

772262 I liked it but was a tad disappointed because Stones from the River was so terrific. If I had read it in reverse order I think I would have thought differently. It was good but not outstanding.

message 361: by Elizabeth (new)

2026178 Meg - what did you think of the Hegi book?

message 360: by Meg (new)

772262 I don't think I added these books:

Floating in My Mother's Palm - Hegi - Germany
Sarah's Key - England/Germany
The Wild and True Adventures of the Hunt Sisters - USA
The Zookeeper's Wife - Germany
The Factory Girls - China

2342217 Updated the spreadsheet and thanks Elizabeth for that edit!

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=t...

The United States has taken the lead at 19 with England at a close 18.

If a person said BookA visited US City A and US City B plus Country C, I listed the book three times alongside each visitation.

For example, in Band of Brothers, they go from the US to England to France and lastly Germany (well then back to the US).

message 358: by Tanja (new)

2342217 Figured people can look at the spreadsheet to easily see recommendations for certain countries rather than searching through 8 pages of postings.

I'll finish once I give my eyes a rest.

message 357: by Elizabeth (new)

2026178 I see you have Guernsey listed as France, but the Guernsey Islands are English.

message 356: by Meg (new)

772262 This is excellent Tanja. Thank you.

message 355: by Tanja (new)

2342217 This worksheet is up to Message 285:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=t...

You'll see England is the most popular place to visit in this Book Challenge (up to Msg 285).

message 354: by Meg (new)

772262 I love spreadsheets. I make them for everyone at work and then I have to teach them how to read it.

message 353: by Tanja (new)

2342217 Yup. I saw the google map but it's difficult to read solely by a straight off list or to calculate percentages ;)

I'm such the nerd though with spreadsheets. Watch me google doc it later on.

message 352: by Elizabeth (new)

2026178 Tanja, look back up the thread and find the link to a google map for books read by our group.

I have been in the US mostly since last I reported with the exception of Those Who Save Us in Germany.

message 351: by Meg (new)

772262 That would be awesome Tanja. The map is a lot of fun but a spreadsheet would be very easy to read.

My idea was that when we had clusters of one country we could open a seperate thread and discuss that one particular country (culture/literacy etc) Which is what we did in the mideastern thread that Tera opened.

message 350: by Tanja (new)

2342217 Tempted to google doc a spreadsheet to show which countries have been taken (by so many times), then if the country is based by author or setting.

Looking at my To Read stack, I have one for France and Nepal.

message 349: by Dolly (new)

1280521 There are some great around the world books everyone has suggested here, some I've read and some I plan to read based on your recommendations. Great thread :)

message 348: by Katie (new)

1283225 I'm in Botswana right now with The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency on audio.

Sad to say, but I'm not enjoying it very much. :(

message 346: by Meg (new)

772262 I have been reading a lot of books that have taken place in Germany and Poland. I am very interested in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. I finished Skeletons of the Feast, Sarah's Key and am in the middle of The ZooKeeper's Wife.

I also just returned from China with Factory Girls.

Has everyone entered their books on the map? It is pretty impressive..

message 345: by Tera (new)

767086 I think this thread got buried but it's so great I'm not letting go.
Let's see... I've been to India with The Blue Notebook I really think a lot of you would like it. tough read but so well done.
I'm trying to get to Columbine but some yahoo has it overdue a week now. I'm also thinking of taking a trip back to england with some zombies and Ms Austen.
Where has everyone been this month?

700236 Meg I am finally reading/listening to What is the what? It is really keeping my interest and the reader is really good. :)

Just finished...yeah!

message 343: by Meg (new)

772262 OK So I finished Little Bee (good book) that covers Nigeria. Where on the map in Africa is that??????? I am so geographically challenged!

message 342: by Meg (new)

772262 LinBee, yes it is shares the island with Haiti, but I had to guesstimate, I am glad it is close!

I love the map!

Isn't it on the same island as Haiti? It looks like you at least got it close!

message 340: by Kat (new)

689255 Yeyyy....... added some balloons..... it is pretty neat to look at that map!!!

message 339: by Meg (new)

772262 You have to click on collaborate first and then you will see the edit button

message 338: by Jennifer W (new)

960496 How do you create flags? I don't have an edit button when I go there. I can see everyone else's flags, but don't know how to make some of my own.

message 337: by Meg (new)

772262 Well the geographical challenge is a learning experience!

PS I couldn't figure out where the Dominican Republic was so I just dropped the flag in the ocean, I know I am shameless

message 336: by LinBee (new)

1285949 Lori wrote: "This is so fun Meg! I'm going to have to go back and look for specific locations though..."

I know! That's the hard part, and then you have to find it on the map. But it's a fun kind of hard, so it's worth it!

message 335: by Lori (new)

1769862 This is so fun Meg! I'm going to have to go back and look for specific locations though...

message 334: by Meg (new)

772262 One flag for where you live. Then one flag for each book that your read (the flag goes where the book took place)

message 333: by Duygu (new)

2166904 How do we place the flags where we live?? I am sooo confused..

message 332: by Meg (new)

772262 Good job LinBee!

message 331: by Elizabeth (new)

2026178 Meg wrote: "Don't forget to log in your flag where you life."

Ok, I'll go back and do that. ;-)

message 330: by LinBee (new)

1285949 Yay! I placed a flag where I live! Took awhile, but I did it!

message 329: by Meg (new)

772262 You guys are awesome, the map looks terrific!
Don't forget to log in your flag where you life.

message 328: by Jennifer W (new)

960496 I don't have an "edit" button..

message 327: by Elizabeth (new)

2026178 I added a bunch of books, too. One is in the ocean off Australia, because I didn't zoom in enough to get it properly placed. I'd be glad to delete it and set it again, but I can't find it in the list. One more thing . . .

message 326: by Meg (new)

772262 Oh I am so glad you got it. this is a good day!

message 325: by Elizabeth (new)

2026178 LOL

Thank you, Katie!

I see them now, said the blind man as he picked up his hammer and saw

message 324: by Katie (new)

1283225 Elizabeth - When you click the "Edit" button, 3 new icons show up at the top left side of the map pane. Click on the blue flag in the center, then click where you want to place it.

message 323: by Elizabeth (new)

2026178 What blue flag? The only blue flags are already designating other places.

message 322: by Meg (new)

772262 click on the blue flag and then place it. There will be a box that you type in your information.

message 321: by Elizabeth (new)

2026178 Edit the map. I find the "edit" button next to collaborate, but all that does is bring up the box that names the map. I haven't a clue how to add a location.

message 320: by Meg (new)

772262 If I find a floating flag Duygu I will know it is yours! For those of you who are having trouble what part is it that isn't working for you?

message 319: by Duygu (new)

2166904 Ufff I hope I did this correctly... Tried to add Ethiopia and Addis Abbaba & the Seventh Scroll .. after I added it I accidentally deleted the whole map.. I know I know I'm Blonde!!!! Then I "undid" the bad bad deed. So now the map is saved and my Ethiopia is there I hope and also I think another little flag which I have no idea where it is in the map :) sorry...

1283225 I'm in the Congo right now for The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.

Just added it to the map!

message 317: by Erika (new)

1037839 I'm having trouble too, but things like this usually stump me =)
