With 5 days left in the month, I'm unveiling February 2009 Reading Challenge. We will be having a theme challenge called "Share-the-Love, Love a New Author"

As readers, we tend to be overly loyal to authors that we are familiar with. February's challenge is to read 9 books that were written by authors that are "new" to you, meaning this is the first time that you have read their work.

Challenge Duration: February 1 - February 28, 2009

You can put your tentative list up...but no reading yet until February 1st for these books.

Nichole, Dawn, London Girl,

Welcome aboard for the Feb.Challenge.

We are not really strict with the genre part, so, as long as they are new authors to you, it would be okay.

Angie | 197 comments This is great - I've only recently joined the site and I loved the idea of your January challenge.
Now to go search my bookshelf for new authors!!

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 1019 comments Mod
Glad you like it, Angie. Feel free to post your tentative titles for the challenge. They can be revise anytime you like.

Happy to have you join us again, DarkHeart.

Welcome, Tammy. Hope you will enjoy your first challenge.

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (DarkHeart) | 737 comments Tammy wrote: "3.iron kissed-Patricia briggs"

Tammy, I absolutely adore Patricia Briggs and her Mercy Thompson series, so I commend you on your choice! ;) However, if this is your first time reading her I just want to make sure you're aware that Iron Kissed is the third book in the series and I would really recommend you read them in order. Of course you're welcome to tell me to mind my own business as well. LOL

I love this challenge. I've got a stack of books that I HAD to buy immediately because they looked so good but I have yet to read them. This is the first challenge I've been part of so I'm excited. Great idea!

Moderatrix Lori (ModeratrixLori) Oh're killing me! I didn't realize you were going to run two different challenges in each group. Okay...well I guess I have my work cut out for me. There may be some overlap between the two challenges.

*giggles* You don't have to play both challenges if its too much..but since the books can overlap it might not be as hard as you think..LOL..If you look at mine, some of them are also in my RRR Group Feb Challenge and some are BOM reads.

Have fun putting together your list.

Tammy | 56 comments Darkheart thanks for the imput, i just looked at them , thanks for telling me i would have started with the wrong one and i would have really been mad. So i will start moon called on feb 1st,cant wait. Thanks again.

oh boy, oh boy, oh boy--this one is going to be HARD. I've at least read short stories by almost all of the "easy" to get authors in this field. Not sure what to do. (scanning shelves deperately, frantically going through and the library listings)

Even if its not a book that someone else has posted as wanting to read--I've still read books by them.
Come on folks, I need suggestions.

Lady Ozma | 454 comments Ann,

What about that book I emailed you about? Also, I have a book on my shelf that might work for you. It's a loaner from someone else and I plan to read it next month. I'd tell you the author but I don't remember... HAHA... I'm going to read it in February now. :)

Dawn (DawnV) | 305 comments Lady Ozma I think I have that Blue Moon book. I haven't read anything by Lori Handeland

Let me know if you decide to read it then we can compare notes!

Lady Ozma | 454 comments Dawn, I think I'll probably end up reading it. I'm pretty sure I have it. :) Like 99.9% sure. I need to go through and dig out nine books so they can sit together. LOL

MK (Food actvist) (Daalmonette) Yz: Oh you bet imma start right at 12:01 AM. I am a night owl so I will have a head start on all yall that have "lives" during the day.

Lady Ozma | 454 comments I'm a night owl as well. Even better, I live on the east coast! SO while everyone else is clock watching, I can be reading! HAHAHAHA

But we'll see if I am at the point of starting a new book then or not. :) Right now I'm reading a book and I have one I'd like to follow it up with. If I can get them both done by the end of the month, woot! Otherwise I'll just wait till I can wrap up whatever I'm reading. :)

I don't really have a life, per se. Just two cute boys that need schooling that draws me away from my TBR. :) They are worth it though. I live for them, and they are all I want. If I get eaten by the TBR monster, so be it. LOL

I've read a few of Lori's books, including Blue Moon, and really enjoyed them. In general, the weres aren't the good guys in the stories, but there are, of course, exceptions. =)

Angie (persephpom) | 13 comments Hey everyone, I just joined the group and am always up for a good reading challenge. I've had a few authors on my list that I've been meaning to get to and this is the perfect opportunity to give them a shot.

Here's my tentative list:

1. Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison
2. Vampire Academy by Rachelle Mead
3. Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews
4. A Girl's Guide to Vampires by Katie MacAlister
5. Kitty and the Midnight Hour by Carrie Vaughn
6. Neuromancer by William Gibson
7. The Vampire's Kiss by Raven Hart
8. Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu
9. Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost

Lori, I think you're going to love Bitten, it's one of my favorite books of all time!

Moderatrix Lori (ModeratrixLori) Ann - check out this group if you haven't already

I also have an Excel workbook with a ton of suggestions that I'd be happy to email you if you're interested. Just shoot me a message.

Moderatrix Lori (ModeratrixLori) Nichole, I'll be anxious to hear what you think about Victorious Star. Loved that book!

message 31: by Angie (last edited Jan 28, 2009 11:40AM) (new)

3) You Slay Me by Katie MacAlister

All books that have been sat on my shelf for a while - glad to finally have the 'push' to read them!

Nichole (Dirty H) (DirtyH) Lori, I'll be sure to let you know. I'm still waiting for it to come in the mail... :)

Lady Ozma | 454 comments OK, so I went through my shelves. I was able to find 9 books by authors I haven't read before.

Here's my tentative list:

1.Blue Moon by Lori Handeland (Knew I had it!)
2. The Haunting by Hope Tarr
3. Confessions of a Werewolf Supermodel by Ronda Thompson
4. A Babe in Ghostland by Lisa Cach
5. Moon Called by Patricia Briggs
6. Tall, Dark and Dead by Tate Hallaway
7. The Vampire of Venice Beach by Jennifer Colt
8. Just a Hint Clint by Lori Foster
9. The Front by Patricia Cornwell

I've got some other books I may try to slide in if I can. Some of which I were going to read but am loaning to my mother instead because she's in desperate need. We went through my stacks today on the phone. HEHE So I now have a stack of 7 books to return to her and 7 books from my TBR for her to read for this challenge. It feels good to be giving HER a bag of books for a change! HAHA

Ann aka Iftcan (Iftcan) | 2390 comments Mod
quick question--I just finished a book that I picked up by accident (the central character has almost the same name as that of another series I wanted to start reading) and didn't realize til I went to put it into my "read" list on this site that I'd already read other books by that author. They were using a slightly different form of their name, I guess to keep the mystery different from the horror/PR books that I'd previously read by her (Chelsea Quinn Yarbro was the author--and the books I'd read by her before were in her Saint Germaine series)

What happens if you discover something like that? Further examples are: Katie Maxwell, who writes under 3 different names, depending on what genre it is. Andre Norton (yes, I did have to get her in) who has probably 12 pen names, mostly male pen names from back in the "golden age" of scifi/fantasy when "women didn't write THAT kind of books". There are others that do the same thing, so anyway--what about those kinds of books?

MK (Food actvist) (Daalmonette) Lady Ozma wrote: "I'm a night owl as well. Even better, I live on the east coast! SO while everyone else is clock watching, I can be reading! HAHAHAHA

Oh that's evil! Haha!~ But I am on Central time so I am not far behind...

MK (Food actvist) (Daalmonette) If anyone is interested in a book discussion based on my list PM me and I will start a thread here in PNR OK? I think that will work right? Let me know if that sounds right.

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 1019 comments Mod

Even if its the same writer, but under a different pen name, let's just based it on pen name then. Like for example, I've read a lot of Nora Roberts, but I haven't read any of her works as JD Robb, I'll consider JD Robb "new" to me.

Hope that helps.

Nichole (Dirty H) (DirtyH) Yeah, I think if they're using a different pen name, you can assume the style or type of book is fairly different from their other stuff, so I think it counts.

Lady Ozma | 454 comments Kenjii: As Voltaire sings: I do it all because I'm evil...

YZ, thanks for the clarification. :) Ann and I were discussing that one on the phone today when I was pulling books for the challenge!

Moderatrix Lori (ModeratrixLori) Jael, I loved Slave to Sensation. Hope you enjoy it.

new_user | 1383 comments Yeah, that's a good one. And Ione. I have Smith and Kessler on my TBR too, so you can tell me if they're any good. ;)

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Well I know I'll enjoy Singh since you two enjoy her. I can't wait to read her and Ione. Are they steamy reads?

New User- I'll definitely let you know how I liked them.

new_user | 1383 comments Cool, Jael. Yeah, they're steamy, Ione more so than Singh because Singh's characters have to break down barriers, etc., so you have to wait for the good stuff, LOL. ;)

Angie (persephpom) | 13 comments I just finished the book I was currently reading and am now not-so-patiently waiting until midnight to get started on my Feb list. :D

Lady Ozma | 454 comments Egads. Start something now. Even if you use it as the car read while waiting for people to do stuff... I mean what on earth are you going to do between now and midnight?

THough I'm one to talk, I'm hanging out on facebook wasting time. Instead of being useful and reading. But I finished my 25th book earlier today and think I deserve a breather. ROFL

Angie (persephpom) | 13 comments LOL, I've been reading some graphic novels to pass the time. And I really should be working right now. I'm a freelancer so I have to kick myself in the rear every now and then to stop myself from reading and actually get some work done lol.

Did you finish your 25th book for January? That's an impressive number!

Lady Ozma | 454 comments I have a novel to edit, but I got distracted with reading. LOL So I've decided I must tackle that in February. But I also want to read nine books for the challenge. I hope i can find a way to do both along with everything else.

I did finish my 25th book for January. I do admit that some were exceedingly easy. Those two Dr Who novels flew right through. One of the 25 books was a graphic novel by Jim Butcher. I also tore down wallpaper in my kitchen and dining room over the space of a week and listened to six audiobooks. So that sure helped my numbers! :)

Lady Ozma | 454 comments It's FEBRUARY!!! I can start reading! *GRINS*

Just wanted to say...

I've got Tall, Dark & Dead by Tate Hallaway right here. As soon as my Monk episode is over... I'm gonna open it up! *GRINS*

Cheryl (cheryllaflammegmailcom) | 44 comments Hey,
It's only 9:00pm here. Does that mean i get to start!! LOL!!

It's February somewhere!!
