~Jennifer~ (Book_Addiction) | 2005 comments I can't decide on one book so I'm calling ALL of them! :) In September, I'll be hosting a Read-a-Thon for Literacy Week. Feel free to sign up now and get your reading list ready! My goal is for us all to chip in and read at least 50,000 pages that week! Info to follow below. (If you're a member of the Susan Mallery group you may recognize this from last year!)

~Jennifer~ (Book_Addiction) | 2005 comments description
2012 National Family Literacy Week Read-a-Thon
  September 10 – September 16

Come join us at the The Challenge Factory group for a Literacy Week Read-a-Thon. We hope you will invite your friends and family to join us and help us promote literacy. Here are a few statistics for the United States:

Many of the ills plaguing the USA, for example, are directly related to illiteracy.

description Literacy is learned. Illiteracy is passed along by parents who cannot read or write.

description One child in four grows up not knowing how to read.

description 43% of adults at Level 1 literacy skills live in poverty compared to only 4% of those at Level 5

description 3 out of 4 food stamp recipients perform in the lowest 2 literacy levels

description 90% of welfare recipients are high school dropouts

description 16 to 19 year old girls at the poverty level and below, with below average skills, are 6 times more likely to have out-of-wedlock children than their reading counterparts.

description Low literary costs $73 million per year in terms of direct health care costs. A recent study by Pfizer put the cost much higher.

We hope to see you join us! Thank you for your time. Happy Reading!

message 5: by ~Jennifer~ (last edited Aug 18, 2012 09:43am) (new)

~Jennifer~ (Book_Addiction) | 2005 comments I'm going to try for 2500 pages. Should be do-able.

Monica (nutz4reading) | 25 comments I replied to the message/email that I would participate. I can't even guess how many pages I will read. I work full time so I read when I can. My choices for books will be what I am currently reading. Will add once it gets closer to the read-a-thon

Jessika (jessika_56) Awesome, I'm in. I don't know exactly what I'll be reading, but I'll aim for 1000 pages.

The last read-a-thon I did was 48 hours and I read just over 400 pages. BUUUUT I neglected chores, husband, etc to do so, and I know I can't neglect my other responsibilities for a whole week... So 1000 pages it is. And even that might be too much. We'll see!

Mallory Anne-Marie Forbes (Mallory_SupernaturalAficionado) | 4 comments Count me in! If I can write 50K in one month for NaNoWriMo, by golly I can read 50K in one week! I just won't sleep:)

I did Nano for the first time last year! My book was terrible, nothing I'd ever show to anyone, but the more often you write, the better you get... right? lol
