I'm going to close this thread, as it's become unwieldy. If you'd like to request a feature not on here, or vote for one already on here, search for an existing thread, or start a new one!
This has probably already been suggested before, but... could there be a "Find People with Similar Book Taste as You" option under Explore/People? I see popular people, best reviewers, and people near me, but what I really want to find is someone with impeccable taste like I do, so that I can see what other books they like and put them on my to-read list. Thanks.
Michelle and Crystie,Improved group shelving and progress for ebook/Kindle editions are both on the to-do list. Thanks for the suggestions!
I like that books that are being currently read can be updated with progress by page numbers. Is there any chance that there could be a second option for ebook/Kindle readers? Many of my books don't have "pages" that I can input, but do have a percentage that tells me how much of the book I have completed. I would love to be able to update all of my books and not only my printed books.
I love the suggestions of half star ratings! Just throwing that out there :)
Thank you!
It seems that the group bookshelves edit features do not have the flexibility of the individual shelves. Will this be improved in the near future?
Also, I would like the ability to sort the group shelves alpha-numerically like they do on an individual shelf. They currently sort by the number of books on the shelf (high to low). It is really frustrating that I can't control the order in which the shelves sort.
Firefox and Safari both have it. I usually use Safari and it has spell check. Also, I have many good online dictionary and thesaurus sites bookmarked and it's easy to open another window and use them.
Spellcheck: probably not anytime soon. Firefox has it built in now and IE is supposed to someday too, so it isn't high priority.
Are you guys planning to add a spellcheck and thesaurus for writing reviews? It would be a great help.
I would love to see option on my "to read" shelf that allow me to reorder book by pages. From shorter to longest or on the contrary. That would save me a lot of time.
Reviews - one more time.
Now we can see the reviews by the date, and with the text only, and that's great. But there is a bug in this: The reviews are by the date ADDED insted of the READ. Which means that if you add that book to your to-read shelf two years ago and just has read it this month, it will be put among reviews from two years ago. At least that's what happened to my books.
Another thing: Is it possible to change it so we can see where our own reviews place among others, without having to sign out?. It feels weird not to see them...

I use Whisper32, have for years, its freeware and both a password store and generator. I don't know if there is a version for the Mac.

Thanks. I'll check it out. When I checked KeePass and its system requirements, it said "for Windows" so I assumed it was for Windows only.

I & some others use book shelves to distinguish books that we couldn't finish, particularly hated or liked. As you glance through reviews, you always see where people shelved the book. This can add emphasis to the star rating.
I like the idea of the no-star-rating (there are some candidates I have in mind for that).
The only problem I see with changing the 5 stars system consists of the fact that everyone would have to review all their existing ratings. And you would never know if a rating you see is based on "old stars" or "new stars".
Shoshanapnw wrote: "If it had a weight of 0, it would be more accurate than leaving the rating blank."
True. That would work.
Shoshanapnw wrote: "I'd just like a "no stars" icon distinct from leaving the rating blank."
If the no star means so bad/not-worth-rating then it might be difficult to incorporate that effect into the numerical ratings, leaving the rating higher than it ought to be.

I like this idea.
There are books I've rated as 1s that I don't hate just don't like and many books I've rated as 5s but they aren't among the best books I've ever read. So I don't know if a black star/3 ordinary stars/gold star system would really reflect what I thought about the book.
Susanna wrote: "How about keep the five stars but the first one would be a black star, the next three would be "normal" and the fifth one would be a gold star? And if you're not interested, a graphic saying "NOT ..."
I sort of like that idea. It's not much different than what they have now, but there's something about the differentiating the stars that I think works.
1 black star says, "I did not like a single thing about this book" differently than the current star that blends in with the other stars.
by the same token, a gold star at the end says, "This is not only an amazing book, but also superior to most other books" differently than just 5 stars.
but that's just me.
Susanna, No, don't apologize. Every suggestion is as good as any other. I just had a question about your suggestion.
Susanna, Re the colors, why would they change anything? I've seen on some people's profiles, they specify what 1-5 star ratings mean for them. They do have slightly different meanings for different people, and that's fine with me.
How about keep the five stars but the first one would be a black star, the next three would be "normal" and the fifth one would be a gold star? And if you're not interested, a graphic saying "NOT INTERESTED" instead of the stars!

I would like a gold star for books so outstandingly good that they just need differentiating from 5 or 10 star books.
Too many symbols could be either a lot of fun or completely out of hand, depending on your point of view.
If you're going to add on symbols, how about one for "I'm not interested in reading that". At the moment, it would be most useful for comparing book lists. For example, I love vampire books, but please don't recommend "Twilight" to me. But if GR's decides to add it's own recommendation engine, it would be expecially useful.

Ooooh! A black hole!
In addition to the half stars, I'd like to see black stars. One star is fine for "I didn't like it" but that's different from "I actively dislike it."
Just one dark star to indicate not just an apathy for a book or a lack of positive emotion but the presence of a negative emotion would be nice.
and would allow me to rate every book on my shelves because some I just can't bring myself to give one star too...

Click "my books" --> import --> export to a csv file (on the right side of page).
Regarding the safety issue mentioned in earlier posts:Wouldn't it be possible to set accounts up so when you generate one, you add a question too, so when later on you want to change the password, you have to answer the question first. Wouldn't that also protect from hackers who change the password?
Thanks Rivka, I didn't know that. But it's only the newest update, that can be deleted, right? So I can't use it in this case since I've made new updates afterwards...Edit: I just tried to delete my newest update and that still doesn't give me access to deleting the older updates...
I would love to be able to delete updates - today I had problem saving an update and ended up adding it to the wrong book afterwards and then it all went downhill from there and I think I ended up with 4 wrong updates...! It would really be helpful if these could be deleted when you have an offday like I apparently have today ...And I would still like to be able to easily print my reviews...

I use Whisper, a password store, but KeePass sounds so much better as it has a password generator so I think I might have to make a change (I hate giving up my old programs for new ones, but this sounds worth it).
This has probably been addressed in the past, but here's my question: Is there a way to copy your "Read" list? I belong to a few groups that I have a reading challenge on and it's getting tiresome to retype my list every time I want to add my challenge as a post in a new group.
Thanks!
Lisa and Cait, there's a freeware program you might find useful: KeePass Password Safe. There are versions for most portable devices, and it will also work from a flash drive. It has a secure password generator built into it. There's no earthly way I could remember all my site IDs and passwords, so it's a lifesaver for me (and far more secure than keeping passwords in a text file or other document).
Oh yes :) I've been doing the Interwebs long enough to know that's a Bad Idea to use the same passwords everywhere.
