Dear Carol, to be honest, i didn't pick that book on purpose. It's not because i can't find the original version, but i've given a job to edit the Indonesian translation from the abridged version. Fyi, I have tried several times to read the original copy, but couldn't finished it. (lol)
Natnat, I just found out the other day at the (large) bookstore I went to that several of the Children's Classics have been 'retold from the story by...'. I was hoping to purchase a copy of Dr. Doolittle and the ones they had were much skimpier than the one I remember reading to my son 40 years ago. I noticed that you indicated that you read the abridged edition of Wind In The Willows so I decided to comment on it. I guess until I saw the bookstore so full of the 'abridged editions' (and some of them were abridged to the bare bones) I didn't realize how many reprints were out there of the so-called Children's Classics. So, thank you for indicating which copy you read, and furthermore, I'm wondering if you did that by choice or if you did it because you just can't find the edition of original length. I didn't realize when I first got the idea of giving my grandson a book, namely one that I had read to his father when he was a boy, that it was going to turn into such a fruitless search. I think I will have to advertise for an ancient copy.
