2203681 Never heard of it

The Infinite by Douglas Clegg The Infinite (Leisure Horror)

A great haunted house story!

message 191: by Kate (new)

2094067 Not much detail to go on, but I can be pretty open minded with what I read. I might keep an eye out for it

Recommend: Crocodile on the Sand Bank - Elizabeth Peters Crocodile on the Sandbank (Amelia Peabody, #1) Only recently read this one and really enjoyed it. A fun read!

83051 Read Middlesex as part of a swap-suggestions deal, here at goodreads. Loved it! A few minor problems with the structure--but can second the Middlesex recommendation for a good book to fit in before end of 2009.

Recommended book: Who Made Stevie Crye?, by Michael Bishop.

message 189: by Mike (new)

Nophoto-m-25x33 Piqued my interest. Have Pnin on TBR list & want to sample his stuff.

Recommend Middlesex by Euginides. Read it two years ago, seems yesterday.

message 188: by Jessica (new)

1020084 I would read that one...I have The Loop by Evans on my shelf waiting to be read. I've heard a lot of good things about his books.

I just finished Laughter in the Dark by Nabokov and loved it!

message 187: by Debby (last edited Aug 12, 2009 06:49AM) (new)

1394632 That sounds like a book I'd like to check out.

I recommend The Smoke Jumper by Nicholas Evans (the author of The Horse Whisperer)

message 186: by Cynthia (new)

1058995 I'm not a huge fan of Sci-fi so this book doesn't appeal yo me.

The Scent of Sake really good historical fiction set in Japan that covers several generations of a sake brewing family.

message 185: by Hayes (new)

1724711 Oh that sounds good... not the kind of thing I usually read, but I did like Jurassic Park!

Relatedly... (is that a word...?)
I recommend The Andromeda Strain which is an excellent movie too!

message 184: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

369169 Oh Knarik, I read that few months ago and really enjoyed it!

I would recommend Fragment.
Its a new release, kinda b-movie horrorish. A reality show films scientists traveling the world making dicoveries... when they come across an unexplored island that has been evolving on its own path for millions of years. An ecosystem that is alien to us... and very dangerous!

message 183: by Knarik (new)

2025333 I am going to read it next. it is on my list.
I will recommand one of my favorites- the Master and Margarita by Bulgakov. A great Book.

message 182: by Jessica (new)

314066 Sounds like I'd like it! I'll add it to my to-reads list.

Just in case I'm not the last person on Earth to read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, that's what I recommend. (I just read it last week and LOVED it!)

message 181: by Anne (new)

1838456 Yes, I'd read that because I like books set in the war years.

I recommend Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman.

Nophoto-f-25x33 Hi, I'm new here, but I'll just jump right in. My sister told me about a book she read called called "Dalton Shores." I asked at my local book store, but they couldn't find it. I went to Amazon.com and they had it. It grabbed me right away. It's about this single lady in the 1940's who is about to lose her 3 kids to the state, because she doesn't make enough money at her low paying waitress job to support them. She divorced her alcoholic husband and is trying to find a new love. It tells about one of her kids who grows up as a musician and his troubled life. It DOES have some explicit sexual situations and adult language, but get past that, and it's a great read. Has anyone else read it?

message 179: by Nancy (new)

763271 I used to read Danielle Steel when I was a teenager.

If you like your romance with sizzling sex, check out: Behind Closed Doors by Shannon McKenna

message 178: by Brittany (new)

2105668 Hmm, I think my hubby would actually like a book like that. If, for instance, he decided to pick up one of his many books and read again, lol.

For someone who may like romance without any profane sex scenes, A Perfect Stranger by Danielle Steel

message 177: by Heather (new)

795102 I haven't heard of this author, but the book sounds interesting enough that I would pick it up!

The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan

message 176: by Jensownzoo (new)

1571381 Sounds pretty good.

Mercy, Unbound by Kim Antieau for a young adult selection that's also good for adults.

message 175: by Josie (new)

1291628 Yes, liked all those books!

The Sherwood Ring

message 174: by JG (new)

48404 Sounds intriguing!

All Creatures Great and Small

message 173: by Nancy (new)

763271 It's been on my shelf for ages. I'm planning to read it soon.

The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse by Louise Erdrich

message 172: by Allison (new)

1637878 I just got it yesterday from the library, going to start it this weekend!

The Stand by Steven King

message 171: by Meghan (new)

1929140 Sounds a little too intense for me!

READ THIS NOW: :)
Graceling - Kristin Cashore

message 170: by Judith (new)

1989379 Never heard of it.

I was going to recommend the Historian, haha, so I'll say Yes Means Yes Visions of Female Sexual Power and A World Without Rape

message 169: by Jensownzoo (new)

1571381 Sadly, haven't read either of them but am starting to think that I need to correct that deficiency!

Think you can't train a cat? Outwitting Cats Tips, Tricks and Techniques for Persuading the Felines in Your Life That What YOU Want Is Also What THEY Want by Wendy Christensen may change your mind!

message 168: by Allison (new)

1637878 The Historian=LOVED it.

If you love Pride and Prejudice, you have to check out North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell

message 167: by Sowmya (new)

673368 Don't know that book but looks promising.

For a little bit of fantasy and a little bit of horror all woven in around a basic tale of romance I recommend:The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova

message 166: by JG (new)

48404 I like horror, but I don't think I've ever read a zombie book. I'd give it a try, at least until nightmares start!

I recommend The Name of the Wind as a good new fantasy book. (Not to be confused with the book, The Shadow of the Wind)

message 165: by Nancy (last edited Feb 18, 2009 05:20PM) (new)

763271 I read "Tithe" and liked it OK, but it wasn't one of my favorites.

For horror fans I would recommend:

Dead Sea by Brian Keene

message 164: by Rora (new)

977340 I like Charles de Lint, so I'd read it.

Staying with YA urban fantasy, how about Tithe A Modern Faerie Tale by Holly Black.

message 163: by Jensownzoo (new)

1571381 I'm am all confused at where we are, but I've added The Wake of the Wind to my to-read list!

How about The Blue Girl by Charles de Lint?

message 162: by Angela (new)

265874 Barbara I think JG is recommending Big Stone Gap as her recommendation.

Someone recommends a book and the next persons says whether they would read it or not and then the recommend a book.

message 161: by Barbara (new)

1883816 JG wrote: "I hear good things about Chris Bohjalian and loved the one book of his I've read. I'll add it.

[b:Big Stone Gap|58822|Big Stone Gap (Big Stone Gap, Book 1)|Adriana Trigiani|http://photo.goodreads..."

BIG STONE GAP is not written by Bohjalian!

message 160: by Christy (new)

409348 Hmm. I really enjoyed Midwives, so I will look up both of these. :)

I love J. California Cooper and one of my all time faves is:

The Wake of the Wind A Novel

1883816 Debby wrote: "Not the kind of book I'd be interested in reading. Sorry.

I recommend Before You Knnow Kindness by Chris Bohjalian. "

Good suggestion. I have enjoyed most of Bohjalian's books. Also read "Skeletons at the Feast", by the same author.

message 158: by Allison (new)

1637878 It looks kinda interesting, but I hate reading books strung together by journal entries...but the premise sounds great. A bunch of women sent by the government to marry the Indians. So I say yes, if you don't mind reading journal entries.

Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin.

message 157: by Joann (new)

1791879 Proza Diary - not sure.
I recommend One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus

message 156: by Jean (new)

1774301 I read I Never Promised you a Rose Garden in school a hundred years ago. I remember it being sort of the Girl Interrupted of the 60s.

On that theme, but non-fiction, I recommend Lauren Slater's Prozac Diary.

message 155: by Jensownzoo (new)

1571381 Sounds like it would be worth a go.

I found I Never Promised You a Rose Garden by Joanne Greenberg to be an interesting read.

message 154: by JG (new)

48404 I hear good things about Chris Bohjalian and loved the one book of his I've read. I'll add it.

Big Stone Gap

message 153: by Debby (new)

1394632 Not the kind of book I'd be interested in reading. Sorry.

I recommend Before You Knnow Kindness by Chris Bohjalian.

message 152: by Nancy (new)

763271 I've had it on my shelf for some time and just haven't got around to it.

Fiend The Shocking True Story Of Americas Youngest Serial Killer

message 151: by Jensownzoo (new)

1571381 The blurb on Fifth Business just didn't catch my interest.

For someone who likes fantasy, how about Rhapsody Child of Blood by Elizabeth Haydon?

message 150: by Nancy (new)

763271 Just click on the link, Brenda. You will see the book and author.

message 149: by Brenda (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 Dont't know Tender Morsels (author??), but will look for it for my TBR list. I'm recommending Fifth Business by Robertson Davies (a Canadian).

message 148: by Nancy (new)

763271 I've only read A Tale of Two Cities and am not sure if this would be my first choice, but it does sound interesting.

Tender Morsels

message 147: by Monica (new)

437183 Never heard of it. But putting it on my TBR list! Looks great!

Hard Times by Charles Dickens

message 146: by Nancy (new)

763271 Oooh, this sounds good, El! My Czech penpal sent me one of his books and I can't remember the exact title. Detective stories about Lieutenant Boruvka, I think.

I found When God Looked the Other Way An Odyssey of War, Exile, and Redemption while I was at a bookstore in Poland, but the hardcover price was ridiculously high, so I just wrote down the title and author and got it through my library.

Trash Sex Magic

message 145: by El (new)

83144 Nancy, that sounds great - I hadn't heard of it, but now am interested in searching for it!

The Miracle Game, Josef Skvorecky.

message 144: by Nancy (new)

763271 I found it for $1.00 at a library sale and am looking forward to reading it.

When God Looked the Other Way An Odyssey of War, Exile, and Redemption

message 143: by Fallon (new)

1648774 Don't usually read 'self help' type books, sounds interesting though.
I would like to recomend - year of wonders by geraldine brooks
