I was reading our thread on maps and after reading Michael's posting on a old map done by his brother on Middle Earth, i remembered a very old Middle Earth wall poster that i have had hidden away for years. I found it and dusted it off and looked up Google on the Illustrator who had draw this beautiful map, Pauline Baynes and was quite sad to read that she had recently passed away.
Such beautiful work she had done for so many novel covers such as for Tolkien's 1961 paperback version of The Hobbit and C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia and even one that many would remember on Watership Down. So i make this posting in honour of her and hope others may fondly remember the beautiful covers and illustrations she created that brought a smile to our faces.

Some links you may enjoy looking at:
1. Pauline Baynes: Queen of Narnia and Middle-Earth
2. Pauline Baynes: Illustrator who depicted Lewis's Narnia and Tolkien's Middle-earth
3. Book illustrator discovered by JRR Tolkien who went on to create the drawings for CS Lewis's Narnia books.

Terence (Spocksbro) | 100 comments That's too bad about Ms. Baynes.

I wish I still had my copy of her Middle Earth map; it was a work of art, and had I been a wiser child I would have treated it more gently.
