~Thena~ (athena-nadine) Your runner-up for July--enjoy!

Patty | 26 comments I started this book a little early and couldn't put it down, so I finished it already! I really enjoyed the storyline and love the characters. I can't wait to see what other people think about it.

Meem (goodreadscomwhyarentyoureading) I expected more from it.

Ally I loved it!

My review is here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

It's pretty long though!

What were your expectations that the book didn't meet? Merely curious.

Cookie The book could've been better. Anyone fell for the Darkling? Before we saw his true colors?

Yes and no. I'd say I did leading up to the romance, but not during. The whole "anger" thing when they were together freaked me out and I was kind of concerned.

Belkis (bminaya) | 177 comments I was literally waiting on bated breath for this book to release :) so I got it and read it straight away and LOVED IT!!! I found that it wad reminiscent of Daughter Of Smoke And Bone by Laini Taylor. Sort of a rich lyrical quality in the writing style. As well as the rich folklore and descriptions. Loved the character development of the main characters. They felt very real and their feelings and relationship as well as their struggles came across believable and moving. I'm looking forward to the next book.

Belkis (bminaya) | 177 comments Oh and I liked the development of the Darkling. Really like it when an author can tug on a reader's emotions and make us sympathize or at least second guess ourselves about the level of evilness in an antagonist. For a little bit there I found myself hoping that he didn't turn out to be the awful villain and that he would redeem himself someway. But no, later on, clearly heck NO lol! But good job on his character development!

Yup, had me second guessing for a while there :D totally! Hoping beyond hope that somehow we had misjudged him.

Great review!

Cookie The Darkling reminds me of Warner from Shatter Me because they are both supposedly "villains", but readers do actually root for them.

Ally As evil as he was, I'd feel really bad if he actually died (though I'd say that's impossible based on the fact that there are two more books and his death would make everything too easy for Bardugo).

Cookie I bet he's going to miraculously come back alive.

Ally Same. There's going to be some way that he uses his powers to fend off the volcra and escape the Fold.

Meem (goodreadscomwhyarentyoureading) Here's my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Why is he called the Darkling?

Patty | 26 comments Cookie wrote: "The book could've been better. Anyone fell for the Darkling? Before we saw his true colors?"

You know... I think there is going to be more to the Darkling. I don't know if it's going to be as easy as he's just evil. They opened up the question of: Is he redeemable? I wonder if he's going to be one of those characters that appears bad, but then has some good somewhere in him? Maybe he did have some feelings for Alina?

Patty | 26 comments Meem wrote: "Here's my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I had the same question.... no clue! I wondered the same thing.

Michelle | 16 comments Loved this book! Definitely could have used some improvements, but it is so good for a debut book. And since it is a debut book I went a little easier on it.
I got to meet the author, Leigh Bardugo, while she was on her Firece Reads tours. It was so much fun and I got her to sign my ARC copy.
I really recommend this book. I read an ARC copy and I'm tempted to read a finished copy to see what changes were made.
Also I really loved Mal. Most people fell for the Darkling, but I rooted for Mal the entire book.

Shae/Shelver (ShaeLit) | 7 comments I really, really liked this book. My review is here: http://shelversanon.blogspot.com/2012... but I did want to add that I totally agree with Michelle. Mal is my guy to the end!

Very interesting premise indeed. Would love to see the author try and redeem him. Tall order with his track record and all the evil he's done, but hey, a great author can pull impossible things off so who knows lol! He definitely had me doubting his complete evilness for a bit there at the beginning with his seemingly doting attitude towards Alina. but in the end all his plotting and scheming was just too much. His poor mother! Using Mal to track down and kill the sacred stag and not even tell Alina! Enslaving her with that collar. Treating her like a criminal. Trying to kill Mal. Killing all those people to make a point! Extending the fold! I don't know, but I can't see him coming back from that to be redeemed. Well, maybe if he dies and is reborn? :D

Michelle | 16 comments I'm so excited to see where the author takes the story in the next book. There are a few loose ends and I would definitely love to see more of the Darkling.

Jess Hood (jessicahood) | 23 comments I am just about to start this book, it's all loaded up on my Kobo ready to go. I can't wait to see what this books about and share my ideas with you guys.

I shall add my opinions to the end of this comment once I'm done.

I just wanted to share my excitement with the whole world :p

I just finished this book this morning. I have to admit that I didn't find this interesting to begin with, it took me quite a few chapters to get interested, but once I was interested I couldn't get enough of the story, and the characters.

Am I the only one who sort of wanted the Darkling to not be evil in the end? But obviously he was always going to be, with a name like that. Haha!

Paul Decker (pdecker) I really liked this book!

I made a video review where I cooked some dishes inspired from the book!

Check it out!

I just finished this one. It took me a little bit to get into it. I was really confused by all the names, places, and terminology. I really dislike when authors do that - I took notes to try and keep everything straight. Overall, I really enjoyed the story though. Loved Alina. Loved Darkling, Bahgara (sp?), Mal. Especially loved Genya.

I agree with the Darkling opinions - I thought he was awesome and then I was like wait what...grr...don't die! LOL
