1334924 Besides what we are reading from this group I thought it would be good to share other books that we may be reading. It helps us get recommendations and we can also rave or rant about other books.

Currently I am reading Messenger by Lois Lowry. It is a YA and I am reading it for my Pick-A-Shelf Book club. I also got A Child Called IT and Breaking Dawn from the library so I will start them thereafter I am not really wanting to read Breaking Dawn but I'd figure I'd get it over with. It is the last of the series so I might as well suck it up!!!

What are you guys reading??

165389 So I just started the audio book for Me Talk Pretty One Day and David Sedaris is hilarious as usual. I'm really enjoyed his essay about his fathers obsession with making his children into a band...

Other than that, I'm reading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle which is absolutely FABULOUS! I'm only about 60 pages in but the writing style really grabbed me from the get-go and I really like the characters.

Other than that I'm part way through both The Mysteries of Pittsburgh by Michael Chabon and Cesar's Way by Cesar Millan.

1334924 The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is on my TBR but as you can see I have a list forming...But I hope to get to it soon.

I never did the whole audio thing I just don't think I would be able to focus.

131708 I can't bore you all by telling you for the 15th time what I am on! Almost done, though!

1334924 I see that you have got a lot of reading done. You are almost there! What are you going to read next? I knoew you told us already but...?

message 7: by Jeremy (new)

131708 I don't think I was that specific. I have a book from my sister that I'm going to read but the only thing I can remember about the title is the word Shadow. That should only take a few days. Then I have Still Life With A Woodpecker by Tom Robbins. As soon as I can pick up Motherless Brooklyn and Me Talk Pretty One Day I'll be all over those, too!

842772 Sonja.
I'll be curious to hear your feelings about Edgar when you finish....

message 9: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 I just finished reading A Child Called "It" and it was very disturbing! I just wanted to go home to my little girl and squish her! I just can't believe...

Anywho, I just started to read Me Talk Pretty ONe Day I was supposed to start Breaking Dawn but I let my sitter read it so I had to keep moving. I will read that "book" after Sedaris' book.

message 10: by Sonja (new)

165389 Kellie - I'll keep you posted on my impressions of Edgar. I'm still totally enamored of it and am now about 180 pages in.

The audio book of Me Talk Pretty One Day is also really funny. Love hearing the essays from Sedaris, it makes them more real somehow...

message 11: by Jeremy (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:52AM) (new)

131708 So, I was totally off on the title that sister gave me. I got a jump start on it last night while waiting for my truck to warm up. It's called The Hunger Games and it turns out that a few people have read it.

message 12: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 So what do you think Jeremy?

I haven't really slept much lately (typical) so I slowed down my reading and have only read the first 2-4 pages of Me Talk Pretty One Day maybe I should invest in audio. I will check with my library.

message 13: by Jeremy (new)

131708 It has started off to be quite engaging. It appears that Collins doesn't mess around but goes right to the action. It was enough so that instead of reading just enough to warm up the vehicle, I finished Chapter 1 when I got home and then finished Chapter 2. So far I think the writing is pretty good and the main character is interesting. It's too early to make much of a judgement.

I read the 1st few pages of the Sedaris at Borders a few years ago at my friend's beckoning. I thought it was incredible and really can't believe that I haven't read it yet. Very soon! If he reads his own book on audio then I think that would be a great way to go. Still, I'm going to stick to the print.

message 14: by Sonja (new)

165389 He does read his own books on audio and when there are female voices he has his sister Amy help out. Hearing the way he talks about her makes me want to read her books too... They are a very humorous family!

message 15: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 I never did the whole audio thing but I would like to attempt it tho. I am not sure I have the attention span for it LOL.

I like my print but...???

message 16: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 That was a really good book. Let me know what you think when you are done, kate.

message 17: by Jeremy (new)

131708 Kate, I also really really liked that book. In fact, I loved it!

message 18: by Sonja (new)

165389 I've only done audio for a couple books to date and I always choose them to be relatively light humorous books. In these cases the book becomes more like a story a friend would tell you, especially with the David Sedaris stories when he reads them himself.

For these kinds of books I think audio works well (and then I can listen to a book and do something else at the same time) but for non-fiction or more dense literature I don't think it would work as well.

message 19: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 That is a good point. I think you are right, it would be easier to listen to a comical audio book than, let's say War & Peace?

message 20: by Jeremy (new)

131708 LOL! Funny you should choose that particular title.

I have no doubt it would be easy to listen to Sedaris. I loved listening to Frank McCourt read his books.

message 21: by Jeremy (new)

131708 Holy cow! I finally finished the wooly mammoth! It'll now take me a month to catch up with group reads and other stuff on my pile!

I'm currently finishing The Hunger Games and will be on to Still Life With a Woodpecker very shortly.

message 22: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 U r not very good at catching up j/k. I am still reading Me Talk Pretty oNe Day and this book is too funny! U hafta get on it Jeremy. I think you'd like it!

message 23: by Jeremy (new)

131708 LOL! I know that I'll like it. Unfortunately, it is back in queue until February right now.

message 24: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 I am now reading Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer. I am not really crazy about it but I have to finish up the series and also I am reading it for my local bookclub. Eventhough it is a very large book it is a fast read and I will most likely be done by the end of the week. I also want to get onto something that I enjoy more.

Happy Reading!!!

message 25: by Jeremy (new)

131708 I finished up Still Life With Woodpecker. I really, really liked it. A lot.

I'm now fulfilling an earlier promise to a GR friend to read Kane and Abel by Jeffrey Archer. It has a pretty good start.

message 26: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 Well, you seem to be catching up. School just started so I may start to slow down again but I will try not to as much as I can.

message 27: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 GOD!!! I am still Breaking dawn and it's killing me! I thought it would be a fast read (in which it sorta is) but I am not into it! I have to finish it. I am also reading a lot of articles for my Archives class. Things such as Norman Mailer and Louis Amrstrong and then lucky me, I have to do a 30 minute presentation on them YAY for me!!!

Oh well, it's just me b!tch!ing! So Happy Reading everyone!

message 28: by Donna, The Pusher (last edited Feb 05, 2009 12:25PM) (new)

1334924 I am just finishing up The Lost Boy I should be done before I get home from work. After I read my text I will start on Lullaby after that I think I will go onto White Tiger and then to Bridge of Sighs.

White Tiger is from Emilee's book club here on GR Reading from the Best Books if anyone is interested. She is a lot better at this than I am :-)

Anyone reading anything worth mentioning?

message 29: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 Did anyone read Stephanie Meyer's The Host? I have mix feeligns about it because I was not crazy about the Twilight series.

As I said before I am reading Bridge of Sighs well, not really, I haven't started it but I plan on starting it on the commute home.

Anyone got any good reads to share???

message 31: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 So, I lieft my book at work yesterday and I needed something to read on my commute in so I started I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak. I loved The Book Thief so I am hoping it is just as good but I was told that not to have such high expectations.

message 32: by Jeremy (last edited Mar 13, 2009 06:37AM) (new)

131708 Donna - I'm going to read The Host because my sister handed it to me. Probably in March.

I'll be reading I Am the Messenger for the same reason as you, but I am not sure when.

I liked Bridge of Sighs. A lot. Russo is good at what he does.

I just read A Rumor of War by Philip Caputo which is a Vietnam war memoir and it was great. Very heavy stuff of course. I had to follow it with something light. Living Dead in Dallas did the trick. Now I am on to Lady Chatterley's Lover by DH Lawrence. Motherless Brooklyn is on the queue but I have a couple more in between.

message 33: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 I have read quite a few "Nam" books. I loved The Things They Carried

message 34: by Jeremy (new)

131708 That's what got me started! I loved it, too. It's my first O'Brien. I want to read Going After Cacciato badly.

message 35: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 I have it but have yet to read it. I read the others tho. They were OK but not really about war at all. Maybe we shoul read that for March!!!

message 36: by Jeremy (new)

131708 You wouldn't find me complaining!

message 37: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 I so haven't been reading at all. I have too much crap to read for school and on top of that I am moving into a new apartment so... I will try to get something done..eventually!

message 38: by Jeremy (new)

131708 Uptown girl. She's been living in her uptown world.

That's a lot going on, it's hard to blame you. You didn't even mention that you are always dining for two.

My exG lived in uptown Manhatten. It was the smallest apartment I have EVER been in!

message 39: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 Oh yeah and I also 4got 2 mention the wee one already at home!!!

message 40: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 I am sooo not progressing........

message 41: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 I am assuming that everyone has been busy lately! I have some much to read for school and I am cramming it all in so I have not been reading I am the Messenger How is everyone else doing?

message 42: by Jeremy (new)

131708 Doing well. I just finished up a book called Bucking the Sun. The only good thing about it for me is that it revolved around a major civil engineering project (which isn't necessarily all that thrilling in fiction) and had some commentary on FDR and the New Deal, which is pretty relevant to the here and now.

I'm finally starting Motherless Brooklyn tonight. I'm going to spend the rest of March and April working on a pile of books I've been wanting to read for awhile.

How is school going? How 'bout the bun?

message 43: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 Thanks for asking!!! Bun is still cooking..."it" may just be another girl!

School is rough and never easy I am taking 2 classes and I have to make up one (since my First daughter came early last Spring.

I am trying to get some reading done but it is not that easy since midterms are here but at least I am outta the exhaustion stage!!! (for noe)

message 44: by Jeremy (new)

131708 Yeah! Another girl! I joked around with my wife about having another yesterday. I'm surprised I still have the ability to type.

You certainly are taking on the world right now.

message 45: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 Don't you have 2 already???

What's one more???

message 46: by Jeremy (last edited Mar 13, 2009 08:40AM) (new)

131708 LOL!

I would say nothing except we have 2 boys to go with the 2 girls.

message 47: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

1334924 He He!!! I will still go for more even tho I had a rough delivery process but Aren't kids the best!!???!

message 48: by Jeremy (new)

131708 98.65% of the time! If only there were more sitters available. Or more trustworthy ones, I should say. Oh yeah, and more money to do stuff with once said sitters became available.

message 49: by Kelly (new)

1492716 Jeremy, I dont know where you live but have you ever heard of Care.com? My daughter has found quite a few babysitting jobs on that site. Good luck.

message 50: by Jeremy (new)

131708 Thanks Kelly! I'll check it out, although I do live in a rather rural area.
