Cassandra Piazza | 23 comments How is Dickens defining the Gentleman? Is it wealth, upbringing, or a family name and reputation that have been preserved over generations? Can one become a gentleman?

We have to remember that at the time this book came out it was possible for someone to move between the classes, an impossible feat before. So yes, being a gentleman was less defined by one's heritage as it was in a sense of "honour" and education.
