425836 Hello Everyone! What a great title for a group I thought, "Happy & Brainy." Suits me to a "T".

I'm Teresa & joined Goodreads on someone's invite I think it's my anniversary--two interesting years ago!

Well, in 2008 in the beginning of Spring I was summoned to assist with my elderly father, whom we brought out to Phoenix with us & shared some extra- ordinarily interesting months with before Dad's passing....

From the minute I stepped off the plane in Florida, my mind was awash with memories...and my writing started to pour out! Well, I am giving into that old love of writing I used to have...just don't ask me to talk about it much yet...Genre?

I suppose fiction.

Nice to meet everyone!!

1521198 Hello to everyone, I have been on goodreads for a while and just not too long ago got in this group. I for a long time just went with what I was told as the good little girl I was taught to be so I am now having to learn all the true things I was never allowed to do. Thinking for myself was never allowed.

I am currently a 39 yr old single mother of 3 wonderful teens who I try everyday to inspire to learn as much as possible and make the most of their lives. Reading is one way I do that. We are also learning together about our country, as well as others and anything else we can. As far as being a writer, I have started a book a couple times. The first time, I did not like how it began so I scrapped it. I recently started over. I am hoping I will be able to finish it and that it will be a well read book.

Hope everyone has a blessed day.

It kept me reading. Actually, I read the first part which the author won an award for the novella and was disappointed that was the end of the main character and the following pages were of his sons. I skimmed the rest and put it aside. Then picked it up again and read faithfully until the very end. After seeing the movie, "Julia and Julie," I read again a book I really ennjoyed to get the feel again of Julia. I had a different reaction to her than I did at the movie. The book is quite good, "Out of the Kitchen/Adventures of a Food Writer," by Jennette Ferrary. She didn't know how to cook when she started writing these articles. Takes guts. I recommend it even if you don't like to cook. Joy, you said you didn't think you'd like it but so much of it is set in Brooklyn and then CT before moving to CA setting. It is such an entertaining book about all the famous cooks and celebraties and all came about from this one woman who had a very humble beginning living down the street from a cemetery in Brooklyn. And now I'll end with a quote:

"Occasionally we were taken to Chinese restaurants or Italian pizza parlors. We were introduced to Hungarian goulash and Irish stew. Through food we learned tht there were other people in the world." Maya Angelou "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," nina ps That title didn't come because she was black; it was because she spent some time in a TB sanitariam.

"

Thanks. You're very kind.

Rather than writing about myself, allow me to share with you two contrasting reviews on Amazon.com:

5.0 out of 5 stars One Just Man,
by Camille Kleidysz (Atlanta,Georgia) – Goodreads author

One Just Man written by Stan I.S. Law is a gripping and thrilling novel that explores the power of the human condition. A doctor's promising career becomes compromised when he uncovers a surprising phenomenon. Dr. Peter Thornton discovers his patients within Montreal General Hospital, benefiting and thriving from the miraculous touch of his healing hands. The young and gifted doctor soon finds himself at a moral crossroads when he must choose between his unwanted gift of healing, or remain a practicing physician within the realm of traditional medicine.

Dr. Peter Thornton's uninvited gift forces him to become an outcast of society; and thrust him on a twisted journey through Montreal, Poland, and the Vatican to seek and understand his destiny.

Author Stan I.S. Law is a brilliant writer, who masters the skill of constructing a riveting, thought provoking plot, with captivating characters, and just the right element of suspense. One Just Man is an enthralling and entertaining page turner that stimulates the mind, and inspires readers to envision a new dimension of possibilities.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gate -- A haunting, contemplative work,
by Kate Jones, writer, Pasadena, USA

Stan Law must be one of today's most unusual writers: he can create intellectual excitement with nothing but introspective dialogues, mind-stretching explorations of complex concepts like life, death, love and loyalty. This saga of an elderly Polish woman who records, for her sons' benefit, her thoughts as she ages and loses one faculty after another, has such authenticity of voice that one wonders whether it is really fiction. She is blessed with sons who visit her in the elder hospice and engage her in deep philosophical conversations. The author's erudition ranges over religions, Buddhism, spiritualism, and one rejoices that this 90-year-old woman's mind is as sharp and penetrating as her sons'. The writing has classical grandeur and poetic beauty, the characters are vividly drawn, especially the nurses' helper, a giant of a man named Raphael whose sensitivities and erudition match the author's. This is a jewel of a piece of writing, with an honesty that makes transcendence and incontinence equally noble a part of the narrative. If you value the life of the mind, this book is for you.

You've inspired me to Choose to have a Happy Day. I generally dread what each day will hold as I am more of a pessimist than an optimist - but maybe you're right. The choice of whether to have a happy day or not may simply be in our own outlook.

957634 Hello everyone, I joined this group because I was intrigued by the title. I'm not on Goodreads as often as I'd like to be these days due to my workload, but when I have some free time, I can't wait to get more connected with everyone. I like to think of myself as brainy--I studied Latin during college--I'm not sure that gets me my bone fides. The question is how to be brainy without being pretentious or a snob.

I'm currently a grad student in International Relations and would like to work for the foreign service when I graduate. I also write books. I've written two: The Sage and the Scarecrow and the Lexical Funk: A Triumph of Words. If anyone wants the latter book, I've still got some copies to giveaway. Right now, when I have the time I work on my third novel, based on my experiences in Japan.

I also found out about another site Authonomy which might be of interest to fellow writers: I'm reading a fellow writer's book on the site entitled, Monkeys Kill More People. It's good so far (only on chapter 3). I have nothing more to talk about, so I guess I'll check everyone out later.

1321941 Thank you for joining us, Aly. I hope you ponder my favorite poem:

THINKING
by Walter D. Wintle

If you think you are beaten, you are
.....If you think you dare not, you don’t
If you like to win, but think you can’t
.....It’s almost certain you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost
.....For out of the world we find
Success begins with a fellow’s will
.....It’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you are outclassed, you are
.....You’ve got to think high to rise
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
.....You can ever win a prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go
.....To the stronger or faster man
But soon or late the person who wins
.....Is the one who thinks “I can.”

2211141 Hello,

My name is Aly. I wish I was an author, but it seems that writing will continue to be a hobby, even after school. I am only a freshman right now, but I have already planned my career. Of course, nothing is final, but I sure hope some of it is. I plan on entering the mathematics field. I will most likely be either a plain mathematician, an engineer of sorts, or a forensic accountant. I love to read and write constantly. If anyone wants to read some of my stories and give me constructive critisism, it would be helpful. I know they are probably not that good, but anyway.
Thanks,
Aly

2019336 Thanks, Ilyn. So, you're a published writer of fiction (congratulations!). I've been published with non-fiction essays and textbook writing/editing, but have never been able to get my "story" ideas to move. Is there a book you recommend that helps with the understanding of the craft of writing fiction?

2019336 I'm Sybil. Mostly I'm an artist, but second to that I'm a writer and researcher. For a living, I teach writing at the university where I live. At the end of February, I had my first art exhibition. It was thrilling and terrifying, but overall a positive experience that has opened doors for me as an artist.

I had sold pieces before the exhibit, but selling pieces during/after the exhibit, and then some as recently as last night, was really amazing. There's something validating about having other people put out good money to keep something I've made.

Anyway . . . sort of a long-winded intro, but there I am.

2097186 Hi all,

I'm pretty new to goodreads. I joined because I am an aspiring writer. I have written 2 novels and a screenplay so far. And, as per my previous post, am working on my 3rd novel. I have always thought of joining either a writing group or reading group, and when I heard about goodreads, I thought it would be a great fit!

This group in particular seems wonderful! I look forward to chatting with all of you :)

Angela, and all, forgive my being naive. I have never read (or wrote) anything outside of horror or thriller. I have found myself in the middle of writing a new novel about the formation of a friendship between 5 women. Is this "chick lit". Or is there something special that gives chick lit it's snazzy title?

1950707 Hello everyone. Perhaps the best way to introduce myself is with a story that will run in my local newspaper the beginning of April:

WRITING TO GET PUBLISHED
What do New York agents, magazine editors and book publishers look for in new writers? Former Village Voice columnist, an editor for Helen Gurley Brown at Cosmo, author of six books published by major New York houses -- one a Book-of-the-Month – and now a columnist for the New York Daily News, Bill Manville will once again conduct a free Writing to Get Published course at the Groveland Public Library for six Saturdays, starting April 11, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m.
Here is what Michael Korda, Editor in Chief, Simon & Schuster, says about Bill: “...the work I know best is your novel Goodbye, which I edited. What first attracted me was the dazzling prose; I was equally impressed by plot and characterization. A considerable literary accomplishment but also a Book of the Month choice, bringing an impressive price at paperback auction. What may also interest your students, I’ve heard you in discussion with writers like Joe Heller, Patricia Bosworth, Lois Gould and Gay Talese, and remember thinking more than once, Bill ought to be teaching it too.”
You need not have attended Bill’s earlier sessions to enroll. The only requirement is a lifelong interest in reading and a desire to get published. Everyone welcome, and it’s free.

1993131 Hello everyone.. I write, but not so much for publishing as to simply get my thoughts straight. That said I have had a few articles published in a national gardening magazine, and several webzines.

Last year I began what I am calling my Galt journey, removing myself and my support for that which I know is wrong. This includes a physical move to a small piece of property up in the mountains, where I am building my own home of my own design, using natural materials gathered from the land. Part of the motivation for the move was to free up more time for reading and writing, which I have been enjoying a great deal for the last few months.

I look forward to what this group promises to be, and thanks Ilyn for the invite!
