message 1: by Nick, Hooray, I'm useful. I'm having a wonderful time. (new)

656888 In March and April we will be reading a selection from Fantasy and Sci-Fi Good Reads Authors. We will be voting on the suggestions in February and in January we will be taking suggestions. I have decided on a few rules for these suggestions to try to make it best for the most readers to participate:

1. The book should be easily available. When making a suggestion please provide a link to where it can be purchased or read if it is available online in a free form.
2. The author will agree to be available for questions during the reading. As such, they should be a member of the group and come here to say they will be. I would rather them not be the discussion leader for the book so they can better answer questions.
3. The author should agree to being ok with CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. I'll ban people that use destructive criticism. I'll explain the difference if anyone needs it.

SO, without further ado, post your book suggestions for Fantasy Goodreads authors here. Please, please, please post in this format all by itself. When myself or another mod goes through to find them we tend to miss books buried in conversation. If you wish to chat and discuss just skip a line or so and set the book titles apart like this:

The Stand by Stephen King

This is easy to see and find!

Thanks and enjoy.

840222 I would like to nominate my Shaihen Heritage series. I suggest Staff of Power, Book 2 which is published later this month, but include details of both available books. I will be delighted to participate in discussion and am always open to constructive criticism (which will help shape Book 3, currently work-in-progress):

Cloak of Magic (Shaihen Heritage Book 1) by S.A. Rule - available now from Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and other outlets.http://www.amazon.com/Shaihen-Heritage-Book-Cloak-Magic/dp/0755210301/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1230891052&sr=8-1

Staff of Power (Shaihen Heritage Book 2) by S.A. Rule - published 12 January 2009. It will be available after this date from Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/Staff-Power-Shaihe...

Type "Shaihen" into Amazon (or any other) search engine and you'll find both books!

THE BOOK
Royce Melborn, a skilled thief, and his mercenary partner, Hadrian Blackwater make a profitable living carrying out dangerous assignments for conspiring nobles until they become the unwitting scapegoats in a plot to murder the king. Sentenced to death, they have only one way out…and so begins this epic tale of treachery and adventure, sword fighting and magic, myth and legend. The writing style focuses on characters and plot rather than verbose world building. This first book of the Riyria Revelations is a heroic adventure written for adult readers yet suitable for those 13 and older.

REVIEW SAMPLES
"The Crown Conspiracy is great fun and a romp end to end...Highly recommended and another positive surprise for 2008.Fantasy Book Critic

"A fast paced and riveting fantasy, "The Crown Conspiracy" is well worth reading." Midwest Book Review

"Thrilling, Captivating, Amazing are some of the first words that came to mind when I finished this book last night. I stayed up late into the night to finish this book, so that is a sign that I loved it. One of the better sword and sorcery books that I have come across in a while." -- Cindy Hannikmann, reviwer for Fantasy Book Critic

"From the first chapter to the last, the plot twisted and turned in unexpected directions. It takes a great writer to weave a tale that surprises me, that keeps me in suspense, that keeps me reading late into the night and Michael J. Sullivan is a great writer."Dee Marie, author: The Sons of Avalon

"The Crown Conspiracy was a page turning delight. Each character was intricately constructed so that an air of realism surrounded them. The twists and turns of the novel freed it from predictability and that in itself is refreshing these days. Sullivan is a master story teller"Violette L. Reid, author: The First Chronicle of Zayashariya: Out of Night

ABOUT THE SERIES
Instead of a string of sequels, The Riyria Revelations is a six-book fantasy series conceived as a single epic tale divided into individual episodes. All were written before the first was released so that plot elements are intertwined, yet each is self-contained and can be read independently from each other. With this series you will not be held hostage to read the next one--you will simply want to. Coming in April 2009, the second book entitled Avempartha is available for pre-order now from Amazon.com.

I would love to be picked for this - what author doesn't drool at an opportunity to chat with people who have read their books? Isn't that what we got into writing for?

1054964 Hello - ego alert!

I can only nominate my own book, a fantasy called:

'Gone' by Julie Elizabeth Powell

http://stores.lulu.com/juliepowell

*

'Gone' was inspired by what happened to my daughter when she was brain damaged at the age of two and survived for a further seventeen years. One question haunted me: 'Where had she gone?' This is one answer.

*

Back cover blurb:

After Charley dies in her office chair, how is it that she finds herself propelled into the mysterious world of Avalon?

Upon encountering an essence, which insists is her daughter – the one she knows she left behind – insanity battles with fear inside her mind.

The further she delves, the more puzzling things appear, especially after she rises into the Orb of Caprice – a realm of fairies, talking flowers and goblins…and something else, something that lurks in the shadows ready to swallow her whole.

Can she realise in time what it is she must do…or has she left it too late?

'Gone' is a story inspired by a true event.

*

'Gone' is available in paperback (with or without an ISBN) and hardback. There are also plenty of reviews on both paperback versions.

Here's just one review:

Enter a world of myth and magic, fairies and phantoms, talking flowers and goblins - and of course a superhero to fight the fight for good against evil. But this is no ordinary superhero. Charley Woods is that most ordinary of creatures, a middle-aged, overweight mum. But a mum who will take up the sword and fight to the death for the challenge she has taken on.

But that is for the FUTURE.....for the PRESENT Charley is carrying the burden of grief and guilt of her own past. Her teenage daughter, Jenny, lies damaged, unseeing and unthinking, after 'surviving' a heart attack at the age of two. Charley struggles daily with the question - where has the life-force that was her beloved daughter gone?

And Charley is about to find out. Her own heart attack and the blink of a unicorn's eye takes her to Avalon where she finds her daughter Jenny seemingly alive and well.

But that is just the start of the story. Charley must make her own journey through self-doubt and bewilderment, danger and fear. She takes on the mantle of mother as fantasy hero in a do or die search for the truth.

With fear her constant companion - "I'm afraid, I've always been afraid, afraid of change, afraid of failure" -
Charley travels through Avalon and into the perilous Orb of Caprice.

She must go to the Puzzle Woods, resist the temptations of the sinister twins, Fun and Games, look into the Rainbow Pool and "taste the flavour of fear." She must do battle with the evil Pherson and face her demons, both external and internal.

As Charley wins her spurs in a fast-paced series of adventures, she learns many deep truths, that there is no death, just many levels of being, that the past cannot be changed, just accepted, and that a mother will go to the darkest of dark places for the love of her child.

Gone uses the genre of fantasy to explore the real life themes of love and loss, grief, guilt and acceptance.

Julie Powell dedicates Gone to her daughter Samantha whose heart stopped when she was just two and a half. Samantha lived on, severely brain-damaged, until she was 19.

In Gone Julie offers one answer to the many questions raised by this very personal tragedy.

It is an intelligent and well thought out book which explores a difficult subject in a very unusual way.
Good for fantasy fans - but even better for those of us with our own demons to vanquish.

Susan Eley
Writer and journalist

I am available for any questions and can take criticism...eek!

Thank you for this opportunity. Now I must get back to writing.

*smile*

1054964 Well, I couldn't help it so here's another fantasy from me:

The Star Realm by Julie Elizabeth Powell

http://stores.lulu.com/juliepowell

The world I'd created in 'Gone' was too good to waste and I couldn't resist this epic fantasy adventure. It is the first in the Avalon trilogy and I am currently working on book two. It's technically for children (8-11) but then so are many books and I love them and I'm way past childhood (according to my birth certificate, anyway!)

Back cover blurb:

What would you do if you were called to another world…a world filled with seemingly impossible things? Faced with this choice, Davie, Ben, Anne, Chrissie and Billy embark upon a mysterious quest, finding themselves transported to the spectacular and extraordinary world of Avalon, whereupon they are catapulted into one of the uncountable heptagonal pieces that make up the magical sphere of the Orb of Caprice…namely, the Star Realm. Follow the exploits of the five and champion their long, arduous yet amazing journey. Though the question remains…will Time be on their side? This story is for anyone with a head overflowing with dreams, a heart filled with a yearning for adventure and a soul buoyant in magic. This is the first adventure in the Avalon trilogy.

*

It's packed with magic, mystery and fun - you'll love it!

Thanks again.

538288 I'd like to suggest:

The Book of Lilith

You can learn about this book most easily at its website at

http://www.phy.duke.edu/~rgb/Lilith/Lili...

or check out its Goodreads book listing and reviews (rank is 4.09 with 11 entries, highly bimodal as people love it or hate it, as one might expect in a book with a message that some people don't want to hear) at:

The Book of Lilith

The book is available in a variety of formats including ebook (pdf, sony, kindle) and trade paper from amazon or other online stores. It can be ordered by any bookstore by ISBN: 1430322454.

This book is absolutely a fantasy, as will be immediately clear upon reading the book preview available at amazon or google books or via the book website, but it is also a serious work with elements of satire and black humor and a powerful humanist/feminist message. As some of its reviewers note, it won't just entertain you (although it is entertaining enough:-) -- it will make you think!

The Fox
Available here to buy, http://www.amazon.com/Fox-Arlene-Radasky...

or FREE off my website and links in my website in several forms.
http://www.radasky.com

Absolutely spellbinding, The Fox by Arlene Radasky is a fascinatingly sublime historical romance and fantasy novel that looks at true courage and truly selfless acts. In this epic fiction that crosses centuries, Druid healers at the beginning of recorded time will be rescued from obscurity by an archeologist of the twenty-first century. Jahna’s clan lay in the path of destruction exacted by the Romans. Her fate is sealed unless a bargain is made with the Gods, which without a doubt means a human sacrifice. Two thousand years later, Aine MacRae is on their trail. A struggling archaeologist, she is on the verge of uncovering the village where they once lived, driven by her mind melds with an ancient force. Encouraged by a ghostly visit, she will do whatever it takes to unearth time’s mystery. Greed almost triumphs leaving the truth and ancient stories buried forever, but an undying love is rekindled.

Thanks! It gladdens my heart to hear it.

But as I said, people love it or hate it, pretty bimodal. In particular if one is a committed scriptural theist (for any given flavor of scriptural theism) you'll probably be offended by it, as it manages to be blasphemous or heretical in at least four faiths...;-)

message 26: by Glenn (new)

1720662 Hi folks,
I'd like to put forth my fantasy novel, Harbinger of Doom, for the group's consideration.

Harbinger of Doom by Glenn G. Thater

Link to Harbinger of Doom's Amazon.com page: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1438214...

Here's the back cover blurb, and below is a summary of reader reviews:

In Harbinger of Doom, Glenn G. Thater transports you to a time of legendary heroes, spectacular duels, courtly intrigue, otherworldly evils, and ancient forbidden magics. This first volume in an epic series is certain to delight fantasy fans everywhere. When mad sorcerers open a gateway to the very pits of hell, releasing demons of darkest nightmare upon the world, only the intrepid knights of House Eotrus stand in their way. Claradon Eotrus recruits Angle Theta and Gabriel Garn, mysterious knights of mystical power to stand with him against the tide of chaos that threatens to engulf the world and destroy mankind. Theta and Garn take up their swords one last time against the coming darkness - a darkness from which only one will emerge. But Claradon has bought far more than he's bargained for, when his comrade Ob discovers the terrifying secret of Angle Theta. A secret so horrifying as to shatter a man's mind and call into question the very nature of good and evil.

--- Glenn Thater's "Harbinger of Doom", set in a world of men, gnomes, elves, and wizards, asks a tough question: what if we've got it all wrong? What if the God we follow turned bad, and the one we call the Devil is really a maligned angel on a quest to rid the world of evil? So goes Thater's tale, and he tells it in a voice as pretentious as Tolkein's. His world is called Midgaard, its capital called Lomion. Thater populates Midgaard with knights, a young-man-turned-king, a belligerent gnome, a couple scardey-cat wizards, Sir Gabriel, and Lord Angle Theta, the Harbinger of Doom. ...what fascinated me was the clever idea that Azathoth/Odin/God's heart turned black, and the one we know as the Bogeyman is really the one who is trying to save us. What a twist, and what an imagination!
---- Dennis Batchelder, Author of Soul Identity
(Reposted from Goodreads.com)

--- An amazing tale of swords, sorcerers, and more!...In the foreword, Thater has introduced the legend of Angle Theta. He is a character that has been cited in a number of ancient writings, and is the stuff legends are made of. ... Thater's writing has you in the heat of the battle, and leaves you wanting more of this epic story. ...[Angle Theta:] reminds me a little of Moorcock's Lord Elric of Melnibone, who struggles with issues in the fight of good and evil. Cannot wait to read more of this saga from Glenn G. Thater. For those of us who love to read of demons and dragons, knights in armor and legends of long ago.
--- "Ellen in Atlanta", Amazon Top 500 Reviewer
(Reposted from Amazon.com)

--- ...now I have something I can reread over and over again. Harbinger of Doom has just shattered everything I knew of the epic fantasy realm and created a sub genre all of its own. With a masterful craft of writing with sly wit you are pulled into an epic tale of dark portions. If you are like me, you will scream at the book, and several characters in certain parts as they become like kin folk. The characters own the pages, the story never disappoints, and thank God for this author! In addition, if you are a Brian Lumley fan, I would suggest you give this book a try. A must for fantasy fans!
--- "PoetryLover"
(Reposted from Amazon.com)

--- I find Mr. Thater's book, Harbinger of Doom, to be an excellent foray into dark story adventure, ... good story, good action. Excellent flow of the story line to hold the attention. Overall very well done.
--- Jacamo Peterson, Author of "A Hard Place: A Sergeant's Tale"
(Reposted from Amazon.com)

--- At its core, Harbinger of Doom is a story of heroes and villains and explores the nature of good and evil, of religion and even politics. But this is no four color comic book world, it's a land where the good guys can die, and where it's not always clear who is the hero and who is the villain....
--- "P. Martucci"
(Reposted from Amazon.com)

--- This is a complex but highly entertaining swords and sorcery story, reminiscent of the pulp novels of Robert E. Howard, but with more depth and undercurrents to the plot. Thater's character `Lord Angle Theta' is an almost larger than life hero like Howard's Conan or Kull. And although he's perhaps their equal in brawn, he's far their better in brains. The other characters are all memorable and interesting, especially the grumpy gnome called Ob....
--- "Fantasy Fan"
(Reposted from Amazon.com)

--- Harbinger of Doom by Glenn Thater is what this genre of literature is all about!...I truly did not put the book down!
--- "Greg M."
(Reposted from Amazon.com)

--- Who can resisit a good sword and sorcery book? Not me. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Harbinger of Doom. It plunges you into a magic fog right at the start, and the action never stops! Fast-paced and exciting, it's a page turner. The characters are interesting folk. I loved the twist of the weak-kneed wizard, and the gnome was highly entertaining. I also smiled at the references a true sci-fi fan would appreciate. Clever nods to Dr. Who and Star Trek, to name but two! There are dark secrets and many mysteries in this tale of good vs. evil. I hope it continues!
--- "Susan Jane"
(Reposted from Amazon.com)

--- ...It took me by surprise because I had never heard of this author and was blown away by how exciting this story and the characters were from the get go. I literally could not put this book down once I started reading it. ...It has all the adventure and excitement of the Star Wars Saga but set in a different world of endless time.
--- "Mythical Books Aficionado"
(Reposted from Amazon.com)

--- ...Thater takes his fantasy and places it inside your brain. I wasn't reading a book, I was standing in the middle of the action, looking to pick up a sword and jump in...
--- "George T"
(Reposted from Amazon.com)

--- My New Favorite Book. Ok, that's saying a lot, but this book is just that good. The author doesn't just spit out a story here - he's crafted every line and word - there's a rhythm to the way it reads; both the exposition and the dialog. It draws you in; providing a more immersive experience than you'd expect in fantasy fiction. The depth of the world, and the complexity of the characters, and an underlying ambiguity as to who's really the hero and who's really the villain make this story a true standout. I liked it so much, I actually read it twice - and found that on the second read I picked up all sorts of subtleties and nuances that I'd missed on the first go round.
--- "Connie Brady"

Nophoto-m-25x33 I suggest Shark Hunting in Paradise Garden by Cameron Pierce. It was published by Eraserhead Press and is available from select brick and mortar stores as well as Amazon, bn.com, and all other online retailers. From a review in The Horror Fiction Review:

"Eraserhead Press continue to unleash talented bizarro authors and Cameron Pierce (with this debut novel) is no exception.

Members of a religious group known as Yahweh's Dawn travel via time machine back to the Garden of Eden. Chaos ensues as early as the first page when we learn the machine has been destroyed, stranding our group of misfit zealots in a Garden none of them could've ever imagined: instead of peaceful animals and calm rivers, they're attacked by flying sharks (of all types) and laser-firing robots. While trying to dodge these obstacles and find Adam and Eve, they enter the Tree of Knowledge--and this is when things REALLY start to get weird.

SHARK HUNTING IN PARADISE GARDEN is a bizarro tour-de-force, loaded with amazing characters (with really obscure powers, weapons and abilites), unimaginable villians, and countless, demetned ideas that probably haven't occured to most people (and at times, that's a good thing!). A massive battle between thousands of flying sharks, a robot army, and the surviving members of Yahweh's Dawn has to be one of the wildest brawls I've read in years."

As the author I can be available for questions and am completely open to any criticism.

2118041 Oh dear god, I just read from "Other John" that he's the old geezer in the group cause he was born in '64. Okay, John, I was born in '55. Oy (and I'm not even Jewish).

I'm a writer. Been writing television for 20-something years. Murphy Brown, Cybill, Mad About You, Becker, The Drew Carey Show... as well as lots of others that downright stink.

I've just written a fantasy/humor novel that just came out, so THAT'S why I'm joining you. I also love talking about story ideas, etc.

The book is called THE WHEEL OF NULDOID. www.Nuldoid.com. It's just starting to get some momentum... so, fingers crossed.

538288 When in 1955?

I'm March 29th. But I doubt I'm the geezer of the group with that, not by a decade or two.

It just means that I started out reading SF with people like Murray Leinster that were geniuses in their day but are now unknown. And Heinlein, Asimov, Bradbury, and a string of pulp writers even I have to go dig out paperbacks that once upon a time cost a quarter to recall...
