I've read the first two in the series - it's okay but light; definitely not worthy of a "Must Read" list thought, so I'm not sure why this discussion ended up here.
Have you read the first chapter of the Uglies? My son who is 15 read it, and my 10 yo daughter is now reading it. I think the premise is a lot better than what seems to be all that popular vampire/goth/witch book storylines going on for YA.
The premise that everyone needs to look the same PRETTY- or be an outcast is a good subject to address considering our culture's vanity.
Also the conforming thing.
I have only read a few chapters, but believe it to be an interesting story touching on these subjects without being preachy.
I'm new here. Is there a thread where we can talk about the books we are reading, off the cuff, like this one? but without the list?
If there is, maybe someone can post that info regularly so people realize.
regards, Mel
ps. My son frequently enjoys Science Fiction, Holocaust, books. I don't think he's typical of the average 15 year old (he's been reading Holocaust books for 2 years) , however, in context I have to believe that Uglies has something valuable to offer if he's given rave reviews to it.
I sure would hate to see a "1001 books..." list that has these books on it. I am not now, nor have I ever been a teenage girl, but I don't get it. It's cool that it gives kids something to read; I just hope they move on to bigger and better things.
I think that a lot of people are misunderstanding the title of this group and may not realize that it's a hard list we're working from rather than people just listing off what they feel are the 1001 books to read before you die.
Someone already started a whole discussion here about the Twilight books - Not on (nor worthy of) the 1001 Books list. Now this one is starting up? There are probably better groups where these books can be discussed - like in the YA books group. Just my opinion. (But, btw my daughter just got Uglies for Christmas, read it and is looking to pick up Pretties now. I'll probably read it just for fun.)
