Angie | 2421 comments Moira Young will be stopping by June 10th for a Q&A with the group! She is the author of Blood Red Road our June book club read. We will start taking questions now! Please welcome her to the group!!

Kyle (LivingIsReading) | 21 comments Hi Moira! I read Blood Red Road back in January and absolutely loved how entertaining it was!

What inspired you to write Saba's character using the dialect in the novel?

message 3: by Natalia (last edited Jun 01, 2012 06:32pm) (new)

Natalia (Natalia2198) | 18 comments Omg I LOVE Blood Red Road sooo much. I have re-read it about 50 times now. It never gets boring. I have a few questions about this book and the second one
*Where did you get the idea for Sabas personality?
*What happens to Jack?
*Will Saba and Jack stay together?
*When is the second book going to be released.
*Will the title cover look like the original hard cover Blood Red Road one.
*Is it true that there will be a MOVIE made out of BRR?
Thanks for writing my FAVORITE book!!!!!!!!! Your number one fan Natalia :)

Siobhan O' Sullivan | 4 comments Hi Moira, I too loved this book and found it gripping! I have a few questions :
*When Ridley Scotts' company makes the film, will you have enough influence to make sure they stay true to the story and the characters?
*One of my favourite parts of the book is the cage fighting, How can ye portray this to the public in the film without it getting to grim but still staying true to the book?
*I am very excited about the next book, Will Emmi have a big part in it?, he character is so full of promise!!!
* I love Jacks' character, he's such a loveable character, he's like an Irish rogue... I can't wait to see more of him!
Thank you for this opportunity,
Siobhan

Zola | 13 comments Hi Moira! BRR is a masterpiece to me - it's one of my favorite books ever written. Jack and Saba's relationship is THE BEST in YA I've ever seen, and the action just kept coming. I'm an aspiring author, and I was really inspired by BRR. And so:

What are your tips for aspiring authors? Anything you wish you'd known before you started writing BRR?

Out of curiosity, did you outline the entire novel's plot, or go with the flow and add conflict on top of conflict?

How long did it take you to write it? How many drafts?

By the end of the novel, I CRIED. Did you go into the novel knowing you wanted to make people cry when Saba finally reached her goal? How did you create the book's emotional development?

What was the most challenging thing about writing BRR? What was the most exciting?

Thank you for your time, and for writing such a fantastic book!

Steph | 9 comments Hi Moira, I read Blood Red Road near the beginning of the year and it was such a fun read! I loved the gritty world you created. I was wondering, when and where is the world supposed to be? Like, how far in the future? Is it in North America? How did the world get from where it is now to where it is in your book?
I'm very excited for the movie. To me, the book actually felt like a movie so it should work great on the big screen. How far along are they in the process of making the movie? When is it expected to come out? If you could choose, who would you pick to play Saba and Jack?
Random question: What's your favourite young adult book and why?

Thanks so much
Steph:)

Lexi (lexi28) | 1 comments Hi Moira! I have to say, picking up Blood Red Road was probably one of the wisest book decisions I've ever made! I love Saba in all her viciousness and Jack in all his swoony-ness. All of the characters have a special place in my heart!(especially Ike)
I was wondering what time period the book takes place in? I assume the future, but just how far along in the future? And what can we look forward to in Rebel Heart? Will there be any POV's from other characters?
Thanks so much!

Samantha (Iamasam) | 10 comments Hi Moira! I loved reading Blood Red Road! Thank you so much for writing and creating this world with these great characters.

I love the Free Hawks, are we going to be seeing more of them in upcoming books?

I'm always curious about the author's writing process. Do you have a certain type of music you listen to? Is there a certain place you like writing in most? Are you one of those writers who writes a little bit every day or so for a couple months or do you just get into it and don't stop for hours/days? Any other quirks about your writing habits?

Who came up with the cover? What led to that specific cover choice?

Thank you again!

Stevie (StevieL) | 3 comments Hi Moira. Blood Red Road is one of the best books I've read in the past few years and I'm always recommending your book to my friends!

I was wondering, what made you decide to make Saba dislike her sister so much? As a twin, I can understand the close relationship that exists between twins, but Saba's lack of care for her sister made it hard for me to initially connect to Saba emotionally.

What first inspired you to write this story? Was it a character? A concept like the cage fighting? The setting?

Do you draw on any real life experiences when you write?

I'm aspiring towards possibly working to becoming a writer. What tips would you give to developing writing skills? And how do you react to harsh critiques of your work?

How involved will you be in the movie (script, casting, plot)?

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and visit with the group. And thanks if you decide to answer any of my questions!

Tatiana | 25 comments Hi, Moira! Welcome!

Having just finished Blood Red Road, its originality, suspense, and heart are fresh as I write this. I first have to thank you for writing BRR for the YA audience. Even though I am past the target age for this genre, I rarely read fantasy/science fiction books outside of YA, so I might not have had the opportunity to read your fantastic novel otherwise. The landscape of YA fantasy heroines is richer thanks to Saba, whose stubbornness, foul temper, stalwart power, and unwavering loyalty cast her worthy of stepping out of Lugh’s shadow to stand all on her own. I also have to mention the strength and vibrancy of all your secondary characters, especially Ike, the Free Hawks, and Jack, who won my heart as much as he won Saba’s. I have no trouble seeing each one of them jumping from the page to the big screen.

I was wondering…What influenced you to give the characters that dialect? As it pertains to world-building, who exactly are the Wreckers? From the bits and pieces scattered throughout the book (skyscrapers, planes, etc.), it is almost as if they are people from today.

Thank you so much for stopping by the group!

Stephanie (bluegirl1013) | 3 comments Hi,

Many authors have said that they don't decide on their characters, their characters come to them fully formed. Did Saba and Lugh come to you this way, or did you consciously decide on their characteristics? I was specifically interested in their genders, and how the story would be different if Saba went looking for a sister, or even if boy set out to find his sister or brother. Did you toy with these ideas at all? Do you think gender is an important element to the story?

Thanks for answering our questions!

Laura | 11 comments hi moira,

I read blood red road last year and absolutely loved it.

Were any of the characters inspired by people you know or are they entirely from you imagination?

Lots of authors say they have many siilarities to their main characters, do you and saba have anything in common?

How did you get the idea to show the way the characters talk through the writing?

How many books do you plan to write involving the characters from blood red road?

Thank you so much to stopping by the group to answer our questions :)

Savannah Andrea Smith | 5 comments Hi Moira!

I just finished BRR during tech week of a show I'm in (I'm a theater kid!) and now all my fellow actors are dying to read it because I couldn't stop talking about it backstage! :)

I read on your bio that you've done some acting in your past. As an aspiring author AND actress, was there anything you gained through theater that helped your writing?

Also, since it looks like a movie adaption of BRR is in the works, is there anything specific (characteristics, quirks, morals, emotions, etc.) you would like Saba's actress to have/convey in the movie, to remain true to your original vision of her? :)

Thank you SO MUCH for stopping by to answer our questions!

Angie | 2421 comments Hello!! Thanks sooooo much for stopping by our group! We are quite excited to have you here. Can you give us any hints about Rebel Road? Have you started writing the third book yet?

Mallory | 7 comments Hello Moira! I loved BRR.

I guess I have one question:
Of all things vile why did you pick mutated earthworms to attack Saba & co?

The day after I finished the book I was gardening and I accidentally scooped up an obese worm. I suddenly imagined it being 30 feet tall, transparent, and blind with massive claws and I screamed and dropped it. #scaredmesenseless

Karolina | 5 comments Hi Moira!
I recently finished Blood Red Road and I love the setting and especially the wonderful supporting characters!

I was wondering:

(view spoiler)[What made you decide to kill off Ike so early in the trilogy?

I was heartbroken when it happened!! Even more than after Epona's death. I liked Ike so much!! I was hoping he would see his sweetheart again and that he'd still be around in the second book to take care of Tommo.

What effect will Ike's death have on Tommo? (hide spoiler)]

Thank you for stopping by to answer our questions!

Marsha Sigman | 3 comments I loved the book! There are some definite world similarities to the one depicted in the Mad Max movies. Have you ever seen these and did it influence your style? I can't wait to read the next book as well!

marion (mayriella) | 3 comments Hello Moira!
I finished Blood Red Road few days ago and I was astonished by the quality of the world and characters you created. But I was wondering...

* Where does the word "Tonton" come from? I mean is there a special signification? etymology? Because in my native language (French) it means "uncle" and I have to say, i felt awkward/funny at first.
* And what inspired you to write a dystopian book? films or books references?

Grace (gdaminato) | 380 comments Hello Moira:
I don't have a question; I just wanted to thank you for writing a book that portrays women as strong, capable characters who are respected by the men around them. It's so refreshing to take a break from the typical YA female heroine. (By 'typical' I mean the kind encountered in most of the YA novels I've read so far.)

Tatiana (tatiana_g) | 585 comments Ms. Young, there have been so many great questions asked already, so I would like to just thank you for portraying the young women the way you did in your novel. I love how strong and self-reliant and courageous they are. And I love that you didn't choose to place these women, even though Saba's world is a wild and rough one, in a position of submission and abuse, like many writers do. I personally don't believe that a broken, post-apocalyptic world would have to be the one where women are uniformly hurt.
