I really enjoyed this fast and fun read."

This really is a wonderful book, isn't it?

I had a problem with this series. I thought the first one was OK and only read half of the second. I just really didn't like any of the characters and the overall plot just didn't engage me. I would like to finish the trilogy someday, but overall I just wasn't impressed.

Thanks Melis for giving me your thoughts on this. I will try the second one and see what I think.

684501 Hi Jenn!

I read the whole series and really liked it. It's been a while since I read them but I do know that the first book was my least favorite out of the three. There was quite a bit of controversy over the third book but I loved it. Others may disagree but my recommendation is to stick with them :)

986586 112) A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

Ok so have any of you gone on to read the other two books in this series? I thought this book was ok but man I really got tired of how self absorbed all of the characters were.

1546959 Thanks, babe. I know GR often doesn't notify me when I have private messages, and I wanted to make sure you got mine.

986586 108) Three To Get Deadly by Janet Evanovich

109) The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula K. LeGuin

I really wanted to love these stories as they are classics but they were just so dry. This book was around 150 pages and it took me days to read it. One of my friends loves the Earthsea books so maybe it was just me.

Viola - I liked it. Somewhere I had totally missed that Stephen King was his dad. I think that was a good thing though because I could read it without judgement. I thought it was a pretty unique concept. The one problem I had was that I had a difficult time liking the main character because he was an ass and I didn't find his redeemable qualities all that great. I did however get attached to the dogs.

However I LOVE his graphic novel Locke & Key. I highly recomend that. It's weird but good!

Lisarenee is right. This series has me rolling. It is funny!

2038272 Jenn, LOL Yes, I meant in the series. Glad I helped in motivating you though. ;)

1147290 Jenn, what did you think of Heart-Shaped Box? Is Mr. Hill as good as his daddy? :) This one was on my list for a long time and I just forgot about it.

986586 105) Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill

Lisa - my actual goal was 30! yes 30! Look how you guys have motivated me! You all are awsome!

oh wait did you mean one more to go in the series? Oh well you all still motivated me!

message 305: by Lisarenee (new)

2038272 One more to go. :)

message 303: by Jenn (new)

986586 103) The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner

message 302: by Lisarenee (new)

2038272 Jenn, Just out of curiosity was L J Smith the same author who was attempting to sue Stephanie Meyer? I thought the book had Awakening in the title.

Hmmmmm.....Sounds depressing. I still need to read the Eve Duncan series. Started collecting books but have so many our from library that are coming due I can't read everything I want to. Plus, I seem to be stuck in a Romance phase.

message 299: by Jenn (new)

986586 101) Blood Game An Eve Duncan Forensics Thriller by Iris Johansen

The latest book in the Eve Duncan series. It was ok but I didn expect a lot.

message 298: by Jenn (new)

986586 100) The Awakening and The Struggle by LJ Smith

I am sorry to say I did not love this book and did not like Elena's character in the book very much at all. I am glad they have changed much of what they did for the series. What is interesting is that the concept is very close to Twilight only it was written 14 years earlier. Twilight however was much better written and Bella was soooo much easier to like. I am not going to continue on with this series as I have so many books and so little time and I don't want to waste it something I didn't enjoy.

message 297: by Jenn (new)

986586 99) Covet by JR Ward

message 296: by Jenn (new)

986586 Got mine too! Can't wait to hear what you think! I am making myself clean the house first before I start reading it or I will not get anything done for the weekend.

message 295: by Lisarenee (new)

2038272 Jenn, I got my Covet today. Yay!!!! Hope you get yours soon.

message 294: by Jenn (new)

986586 98) Love Hina Vol 1-5 & 14 by Ken Akamatsu

Did not really enjoy this one. That's why I skipped to Vol 14. Just wanted to know what happened in the end.

2038272 I'm not a runner. I may wish to be, but probably never will be. I always get an odd pain at the tail end of my spine that just kills if I run too far. Everyone I know who is a runner is in great shape. So I admire your endeavers. I agree who cares if you are slow. Everyone has to start somewhere. :)

I'll let you know when I get my Covet. Still no sign of Jayne or I getting our Hunting Ground books which came out at the end of August/beginning of September. The status still says awaiting publication.

986586 Hi Gals,

Thanks for thinking of me. Life is treating me well but just a little too busy for my liking. I can not beleive that it is half way through October already and eeek I am going to be 35 in a few weeks. Not so sure I am down with this new age but I guess I don't really have a choice.

Thanks for asking about my dog Lisa. He is doing really well. The doctor did a full work up on him since he is considered geriatric and his tests all came back healthy which is great! He is an extra large breed so you don't get too many years with them anyway so I will take what I can get.

Thanks for letting me know that you have not received Covet either because I was starting to think that maybe mine was taken out of my mail box. When you get yours will you let me know?

I am actually a runner now (a very slow one but who cares)but I have fallen off of the wagon in recent months (too much to read and so not enough time in the day for excersise) so I was looking for a little motivation! Are you a runner?

580431 Hi Jenn! Hope life is treating you well!

2038272 Jenn, Are you thinking of taking up running? Still haven't gotten my Covet I'm guessing you haven't either? :( How's your dog?

986586 Wow Thanks Julie. I was curious because her older teen books, Valliant, Ironside and I forget the name of the other one but they are really, really dark and it sounds like while the Spiderwick Chronicles might be toned down a bit that they are still a little dark. Now that I think about it, these books were also lacking in plot too.

Earthsea- So far I have only read the first one The Wizard of Earthsea. I thought it was a little slow and he spent A LOT of time floating around on a boat. I am told however that each one gets a bit better. I didn't dislike it I just felt as though it was a little slow. Thanks for the info on the anime version. I really want to check it out!

Julie just reminded me that I just needed to say since I have not in a while, that I love being part of this group. I get so many great ideas and recombendations from all of you and it helps keep life interesting! Thanks!

1066511 1. I read the Spiderwick Chronicles... or more accurately, listened to them on audio as read by Mark Hamill hilarious - he does all these crazy voices!). I didn't really like them and thought they were kinda too creepy for kids. I about gave up when the goblins were roasting a cat for dinner. Also, they are SO SHORT - the plot barely gets anywhere and then the book ends. I know they're meant to be quick reads for kids, but there's very little substance to them, and I wouldn't bother recommending them to anyone over 12. (Re-reading what I just said, I guess that means I wouldn't recommend them to anyone really.)

2. I notice you read the first Earthsea book - what did you think? I read the series last year and mostly enjoyed it. There is also a really, really neat anime version done by Studio Ghibli (that did Totoro, Ponyo, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, etc.).

986586 92) Catching Fire

So so so so so goooood!!!! These books have to be some of my favorites of all times.

580431 Jenn, hope you had a great vacay on the beach! I'm jealous. :)

986586 91) Prophecy of the Sisters by Michelle Zink

I have been at the beach for the last week and didn't want to start Catching Fire for fear that I wouldn't want to do anything else. We are leaving tomorrow morning so I will be starting it tonight!

I was also excited to read Sisters of the Prophecy and Fire by Kristin Cashore because I found both of these at the second hand book store before I got my hands on the copy of Catching Fire.

When I left on Tuesday morning I still had not received my copy. I am sure it showed up Tuesday afternoon! I am glad someone lent me their copy.

message 280: by Lisarenee (new)

2038272 What????? No Catching Fire?????? I so expected you to have read it. Did you ever get your book from BD?

580431 How fun, Jenn! Have a great party tonight and fun FINALLY reading Catching Fire!

Coors Lite is like yellow carbonated water. Great for hot days. :)

message 277: by Jenn (last edited Sep 11, 2009 02:12PM) (new)

986586 I have not received mine yet but I did go to a party last night where one of the hosts happened to have it so she let me borrow it.

We are having a Smokey and the Bandit party in the back yard for my husbands birthday tonight so once that is all done and if I don't have a hangover tomorrow I will get started on it! Woo Hoo!
(Don't think I am gonna get much of my drink on since it's Coors. I will just have to pee a lot)

2038272 Jenn, I finally got my first book from the BD, Catching Fire. I hope you get yours today too.

I hear ya, Jenn. I hear ya! :-)

Hey, we're all entitled to a cyber tantrum now and then. It just feels good to let it out in some way, though, right? :-) Feel free to cyber tantrum with me any day.

The Mortal Instruments series I'm enjoying right now is all about wanting something so much but not being able to have it. It's KILLING me! Though I'm enjoying the torture. LOL

986586 How sweet are you gals. Really it is no ones fault. I actually got on right after Sans recomended it and compaired book prices. I too have already gotten two of the books I orders and read one of them straight away. I think it's just the pre-orders and while I am frustrated that I have gotten CF just yet, I still really like that they are much cheaper on many of the books. In the mean time it's not like I don't have 300 other books to read. It's just hard when the one you really want to read it the one you can't have thus causing the cyber tantrum. Hmm it seems like we never fully grow up do we?
