Robert (robertstout) What are your thoughts on all the self published work hitting the market. Most of what Ive read seems pulpy, any rare gems?

Caron Rider | 45 comments What are some of your examples of pulpy?

message 3: by Traci (new)

Traci I like pulp. What I've seen is mostly fan fiction caliber stories.

Caron Rider | 45 comments Well, someone had to give me a link describing it!:) But I like it too. I really haven't read any recently though. I look forward to finding out if there are any gems amidst the pulp! :)

Robert (robertstout) I was mainly trying to get a new conversation going on all the self published or underground authors out there in hopes of spotting something new. As for pulp some of it can be good but the majority I'm finding (kindle) is terrible or in desperate need of an editor.

Traci For horror slash humor I've liked the short stories by Robert DeCoteau, but I haven't bought the full book yet. They're about a zombie apocalypse. I also enjoyed The Vanishing. Neither are great but they were free and short.

Robert (robertstout) Ill check them out, thank you Traci :)

One I just got was Vengeance of the Wolf by Solitaire Parke. It sounds really good but I haven't had a chance to start it yet.

M? (everythingbeeps) I want to emphatically recommend an author by the name of Hugh Howey to everyone. His stuff is self-published but is pretty great.

I'd always been resistant to reading self-published authors, but when I got my Kindle and first visited the kindle store, I was positively bludgeoned with wave after wave of self-published books, and I thought "oh great, now I have to wade through all this crap to find the REAL books".

But for some reason, Howey's Wool Omnibus Edition caught my eye, and the intriguing story and the many glowing reviews (as well as the cheap price) compelled me to give it a shot. And I'm so glad I did.

EDIT: Good thing I looked, because I see you've already got one of his books on your list. Still, if you haven't yet read Wool, I can't recommend it enough. It's way better than Half Way Home.

EDIT2: It seems Mr. Howey's been here before, so probably many here are already familiar with his stuff. Still, I can't not mention him here.

Traci Wool is very well reviewed, thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely get this.

Traci Got it for .99. Woo hoo. Love being frugal.

You should check out this website then. She's got some free, some .99 plus some more posted on her website from all different authors.

I got one of the free ones but several looked interesting.

The Omnibus or just Wool 1?

message 15: by Traci (new)

Traci Just the first one. Short story/novella. But don't care. Cheap. I think the omnibus was $5.
